I put the chicken in.. breast down so it doesn't get dry.. and turn it on.. I don't think mine even has different temperature settings.. I put it on about 12-1 and we eat it when I stabbed it and it is cooked about 5-6LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0

um that sounds a fairly small ish one, so i'd imagine if u put it in this morning on a high then by about 4 ish check it. i tell mines done when the bones just pull away. i leave it to stand before serving up.
once you;ve slow cooked one, if liek me your find u always cook it this way from now one. i get so much more meat from it, as it comes off bones so easy.0 -

Thanks for all your replies.
I put it on at 12 on high and it was cooked beautifully by 6pm, and just all fell off the bones.
I shall definately be doing it again sometime.0 -
Hi mad as a march hare,
I'm glad your chicken worked out well. I've added your thread to the main one on cooking a whole chicken in a slow cooker to keep the advice in one place.

I keep reading about how wonderful a whole chicken is done in the slow cooker but not sure how I do it. Do I need liquid or just some oil or butter? I love my SC and use it all the time for stews and soups so just a bit wary of using it without liquid. Help!0

I don't add any liquid, the chicken cooks in the juices it releases as it cooks IYKWIM! It comes out moist and very tasty:D0 -
The only thing I would say is be careful when you lift the chicken out of the crock pot.
It will be so tender it literally falls apart and back into the pot, take care you don't get splashed or burned with hot liquid if it falls back in.
Ask me how I know this.0 -
i echo whats been said fantastic for cooking a chicken and the juices make fab gravy too
i sometimes sit the bird on a few lengths of carrot and sliced onion then blitz this in with the juices when i make the gravy
you can cook legs of lamb ham on bone etc too with very tender results and no splahes in the oven of hot fat0
