If you put a cup of water in the pan with it, and any herbs you want, switch it on and sit back with a cuppa! It really is a great way to cook a chicken. It will be lovely and tender and you will have loads of stock for soup. I cook a large chicken for about 8 hours on low, but of course that varies depending on size and temp of your slow cooker.

I do the same, its so well cooked and makes the meat fall off the bone thus stretching it even further!

  • I agree, I had never done it before until I saw my daughter to it. I am hooked and very rarely roast a chicken now. The meat is so moist and there is no fussing over it like a roast which needs basting etc. The skin obviously doesn't crisp up like on a roast, but I never ate the skin and my OH doesn't now either!

I boil my chicken in the SC. Bung it in with an onion up it's bum, a celery stalk, green bit of leek, carrot and a tomato if I have one plus half a dozen peppercorns and a bay leaf. I cover it in boiling water, leave it on high until it is just boiling and then turn it down to low. It doesn't need to boil, just simmer very, very slowly... So after 6 hours or so it is ready. It can stay in for longer (all day or overnight) and is lovely and moist and tender. It does tend to fall off the bone though... Stock is strained (about 3 pints usually), then bones and veg etc go back in with a couple of chicken wings and more water to cook for as long as possible to make more stock.

I do mine in a slow cooker sometimes, but OH does like to have his chicken a bit firmer sometimes.

When I do mine, I cook it for a couple of hours, then take it out, strip it and put the pieces back in to make sure it gets cooked properly.
  • You can pot-roast a whole chicken but my SC cookbook says it is unsuitable for birds over 1.6kg (3 1/2 lb) & you mustn't stuff it.
  • I once did a joint of beef in mine - It was for Christmas day and on Christmas Eve, the oven broke :( Most lovely tender meat!

I tried it this week and it was gorgeous, shan't be doing it any other way in future. I cooked mine for 7hrs on auto with an inch of water and stuck a lemon and two garlic cloves inside the chicken. There was a lot of water from the chicken so when I opened the lid the cooker was about half full. I saved this and it set like jelly in the fridge. I've frozen it and assume I can use it instead of a making stock with a stock cube? The meat was lovely and soft and moist and a medium chicken did 3 meals and sandwiches for lunch. And, as a bonus, the house didn't smell of roast dinner for days after.
