MSE News: Costs to soar in Airmiles revamp: use points before they devalue

You can find out the cost of taxes by trying to book a normal economy flight to your destination on the BA site. New York taxes and extra approx £300pp. Sydney, £500pp!
I am absolutely outraged at this, was saving miles to go to NY in 2013, now I'd have to pay £600 for the 2 of us -> Therefore it is now virtually pointless to use these points for long haul destinations! Even if they are cheaper miles/points wise, the whole point of booking miles/points flights is that you didn't have to pay any cash, they were generated by your normal day to day spending on AMEX etc.
Thanks for nothing BA!!! :-(0 -
Rang Airmiles to-day to see if I can still use my airmiles/avios to fly from Belfast with Fly Be or if they can only be used on BA flights . Answer no-one knows . As BA don't fly anywhere from N. Ireland they will be worthless to me .0

Q: Can I still spend Avios on flights with the same airlines?
A: We're always looking at the airlines we work with to make sure we're giving you the biggest choice of destinations and flights possible, while saving you money on the price of the flight.
Avios will offer flights with British Airways, Iberia, Flybe, Monarch, Air Malta and lots of other airlines. See Avios.com for full details.
Of course, these flights will be subject to availability and to the Avios terms and conditions.
However if you go to avios.com it tells you precisely nothing of course!!0 -
Thanks for your reply . The people at Airmiles just told me to keep checking for Avios updates0

I've just done some calculations based on the 'prices' Avios have released, compared to existing Airmiles prices. Making the assumption that you get all of your miles from Tesco Clubcard vouchers (which I know isn't the case - I certainly don't) and travel from London, then given the 'cost' of Avios from vouchers and the added taxes and charges, only Moscow has any significant saving. Dubrovnik, Prague and Geneva are also cheaper.
At least I think I'm right....0 -

I use Airmiles for the reason most people do, I think, FREE flights.
From what I can see standard flights to North America are going to cost less in "miles" but somewhere near £300 . which kinda changes the emphasis somewhat.
i agree. i have both ba and airmiles. ( i regret the ba ones because of their surcharge system) whilst i can see the benfit in merging them to simplify - the fact that airmiles will now charge taxes and surcharges on flights negates the whole attraction of them. if they charge you a whack of airmiles and then also £300+ taxes to say, a usa flight, which can have severe restrictions on dates of travel... Well, i can go online and find cheap, normal flights with a total cost around £300 return anyway! why bother with airmiles? (yes i know many people use them to upgrade, but i'm not in that class - i just want the benefit of free airtravel!) i think i shall shortly chuck in these credit cards and start using a chargeback one - so i can use the cash as i please - and not be kibosshed by demands of extra money on surcharges by avios0 -
From what I have read it doesn't look too good to be fair and like many others free to me means free, lets face it you only have to look at any airline site these days to see how little the flight costs compared to the extras and taxes. I can only say that I am glad I held off converting my big stash of Clubcard vouchers at the moment to airmiles. Ive about £240's worth which I was going to change up, am so glad I didnt. I will wait for their double up to come around again and get myself a new TV instead me thinks!Dont wait for your boat to come in 'Swim out and meet the bloody thing'0

Anyone know if there's a table for amount of Airmiles needed to upgrade?0
