Maybe you can got a dog in the garden. Then the cats would be afraid of it.

panchenlama and keystone - wow, calm down. How do you prove it was my cat? I saw it.
There you go, case closed, and the cat poo does indeed belong on your doorstep.
Cats aren't sentient beings either. Seriously, if they chase a laser dot round the room or jump and attack the mirror (you've seen the vids!) they can't be that smart!

What a shame that they are happiest decimating the local wildlife. Not killing for food you understand - but just because it's 'in their nature'. How cute!
Meanwhile our local psycho cat killer is notching up an impressive kill, the latest being a pheasant. It's getting ridiculous - the number of furry and feathered bodies one keeps tripping over hereabouts. I'll be the first to volunteer fort a 'cat cull'. Vermin masquerading as pets...

What an object lesson in failing to see the point.

    Ditto.

    So here's obviously needed explanation:

The Panchen Lama is the second most senior lama in Tibetan Buddhism after the Dalai Lama. Hence my post (as regards panchenlama's postings) concerning the Buddhists' view of the cat which you two seem to be taking offence at and/or allowing your postive hatred of anything feline to lead you into religious intolereance. Or perhaps you just didn't read it properly. Really not sure which.

Oh - perhaps your irony filter needs adjusting?

    Cheers

A question for all cat owners:

If I, or any other person, wandered onto your property (front or back garden) did a dump and then walked off leaving it there would you consider that ok? I ask because all of the justifications and responses I have read here (and on other threads) apply equally to me as they do to cats.

Yeah, but a cat is an animal. Say to a human 'dont poo in my garden'. Then say to a cat 'dont poo in my garden'.

    Whats the difference, Sherlock?

keystone - I hope you see the deep irony of your post. you accuse me of missing the point (of the thread presumably) whilst banging on about the Buddhist view of cats - what on earth does that have to do with cats crapping in gardens, which IS the point of the thread.
  • A lot of those posts get overly insulting, over dramatic and some of the people on here massively generalise.
Like Panchenlama saying 'a question for all cat owners...'
No wonder these threads decend into stupidity.
I own 3 cats and a dog. My cats are house cats - they don't go insane, they're perfectly happy. We've just moved so don't have one yet, but we had a cat run built it our old house. Cat poo is toxic so I can completely understand not wanting it in your garden or getting upset over a cat wrecking your car.
However, talk (even if it is in jest) about harming cats is not going to engender good relations between cat owners and non-cat owners. If I did let my cats out and they messed on someone's lawn then I'd be perfectly happy to resolve the problem amicably, keeping the cats in until I'd found a solution.
One of my old cats used to go into the garden. She never went further and wasn't interested in birds, but when our doves were nesting we always kept her in so as not to scare them.
Never understand why people get so combative; it won't solve anything.
FWIW dogs don't always scare off cats and nor do cats! The neighbourhood cat only ever comes round here and ignores all my neighbours houses. I would recommend speaking to the owner, getting some of the cats' food and scattering it on your lawn, like someone else suggested. Cats don't poo where there is food.
It's also not true that all cat owners are irresponsible. Some are. Some dog owners are. I sometimes think I'm the only person in our area who picks up after their dog and me and my dog have to carefully avoid all the local neighbourhood mess when we go out. Don't get me started on barking dogs. I don't put up with it from mine and it drives me mad from others.

You sound like a very reasonable person.
This discussion comes up on most forums I've read, and without exception someone makes a comment about hurting cats, or sweeping generalisations, and this always leads (understandbly) to aggression between posters.

    Let me add my 2p.

I'll start by saying that I love cats. What I don't like is the situation where cats are allowed to roam in an uncontrolled manner around the neighbourhood. The fact is that cat poo isn't nice to find on your garden, and it can cause serious health problems, it's particularly a hazard for small children.

What I also don't like is the unwillingness of *some* cat owners who don't appear to take any responsbility for their animals. At my previous house the neighbour's cat would regularly leave cat poo in the middle of my garden. I asked the owner to contribute towards cat deterrant measures, but he refused point blank. His words were "well she's a free spirit". Excuse me, but this is your pet. Please take some responsibility for it.
We have laws which enforce dog owners to clean up the mess left by their pets, yet cats are allowed to cause even worse public health hazards. Why?
  • I'm afraid I cannot answer that question and nor can any cat owner. You, like a lot of people, are annoyed about the fact that cats are allowed to roam without laws enforcing their mess. Cat owners do not make the rules and should not be chastised for the fact that there are no rules, although some will be more amenable to helping with the problem.
There are lots and lots of irresponsible owners of all sorts of animals, but cats are often mentioned because of the mess in your own garden and people are very territorial about it. I wish more was done about dog mess so that when I walk my own I don't have to carefully avoid it.
The thing is that some things bother some people more than others. I am really not fussed about our neighbours cat coming and sitting on my car every day (to stare in at one of my cats that I think he is in love with lol), but then my car is an O2 plate Focus and if it was a bit nicer I might be more bothered.
If I was in the situation where cats kept coming into my garden, cr*pping, and I had young kids I would go and talk to the owner and explain my concern. If they didn't want to know then I'd get in touch with my local council and ask their advice.

It's a good idea, but I suspect it would be ultimately futile. The problem is widespread, and there are a lot of cats on our streets. Then again, maybe if people did regularly complain to the council there would be some legislation brought in. I wonder if there are any online petitions - must Google that.
Dog fouling laws have gone a long way to reducing the amount of dog mess on our streets.

BTW it's not a territorial issue. It's a very real public health issue. You'd think in these days when health and safety is a big issue, the nanny state would be all over this one, but not a peep.
