Just a little bump, as my sister is still looking for her life-saving donor, as are many others.

I have been a registered bone marrow donor since about 1992 and although I have been a close match a couple of times and I was a close enough match for my platelets to be used during a bone marrow operation, I have yet to be called on to donate.
It just shows that even 20 years as a registered donor and not being called on, how difficult it is to get a perfect match for someone in desperate need of a transplant.

More potential donors are always required as people like myself become older and will soon disappear from the register.

I hate that my health stops me from donating blood and bone marrow. I wish your sister all the best and hope you do find a donor soon. I will get DP to register though, he has no excuse and my brothers and sister.

I fit the profile so I signed up (relatively fit, though I've been slacking on the gym recently)

Since my daughter was diagnosed with leukaemia it really is unacceptable that I haven't signed up to be on the bone marrow register. This sign up was easy enough so let's hope I get on the register..... Blood, platelets, where else can I be useful? I don't know where to begin

Reading about what donating bone marrow involves, it all sounds pretty heavy. But I know it'd be worth it to save someone's life. I guess I'm hoping for a karma affect: if one day my daughter needs it, I hope there's a match out there for her ( I know I'm not a match).

    Are these registers shared worldwide?
  • I've been contacted today as I may be a possible match. I need to phone the NHS Blood Marrow people on Monday (why don't they have someone to talk to at weekends?) Does anyone know:

the chances of being a match after they take a blood sample?
how long it might take, assuming I am a match, to actually donate?

    Thanks
    Dharmesh
