It's not the dead I'm afraid of, it's the living

I'm not scared of the dark but terrified of ghosties and the like I really shouldn't have read this just before I go to bed
I have seen and felt things and it scares me stiff !
Generally I think they won't hurt you it just freaks me out my OH also works nightshifts and I won't watch anything remotely creepy and if we watch something like that together I insist that he cuddles me all night.
When we watched paranormal activity I was so terrified I screamed out loud and make him sleep on my side of the bed that night just in case something came to drag me out of bed and after watching the grudge I wouldn't even go to the toilet alone.

I don't really believe in ghosts even though I may have seen one when I was younger. I am not scared of the dark per say only so far as there may be 'bad' people lurking to do me harm! I quite happily walk round the house in the dark though.0

I'm your original jelly belly.
I've recently moved into an old church property and my imagination has run riot ever since.
The upper landing is 'L' shaped and the stairs are just round the corner at one end. I keep imaging someone creeping up the stairs and round the corner. I hate having to get up to go to the loo during the night, if I do, I run back to the bedroom.
I have no idea what I'm scared of, I just know I'm scared. Probably a result of watching too many Hammer House of Horror films when I was younger.Herman - MP for all!0 -
Its strange - people who have seen or lived with ghosts tend NOT to be afraid of them. People who havent - Are! is that bizarre or what!
People are often afraid of the unknown.
If you only have films and TV shows to go by, it's not really surprising that you'd be afraid of them.
Irrationally though, I still get a little scared of being alone in the dark. No problem if OH, or anyone else is there, but on my own I do get a little scared. But that fear is based on someone possibly breaking into the house etc (which should still be difficult as we are in a second floor flat, but some people are determined!).February wins: Theatre tickets0 -
I don't believe in ghosts etc. I am not scared of the dark either, although I occasionally feel a bit jumpy if I have just watched a really creepy horror film.
I once rented a holiday cottage that was on the edge of a graveyard and absolutely loved it as it was so peaceful. There was even a headstone a few feet from the back door!0 -
It's completely irrational and the existence has never been proven beyond doubt... so why are so many of us scared! it's a billion dollar industry too... does anyone believe humans can contact the dead?0
-
I don't know. But the absence of proof of their existance, is not proof itself that they don't exist.
There have always been things that go bump in the night (usually for completely normal reasons - radiators coming on and off, someone getting up in the night and knocking something over, mice even), and the human brain is capable of imagining so much, that it is not impossible that some of us have simply had an overactive imagination play tricks on us. However, as the human brain is more than capable of making us believe that some things are real, when they aren't, I don't know how we can ever be sure that one persons experience was purely in the mind, or if it was real.
Can humans contact the dead? I don't know. Are the dead even 'available' (so to speak) to be contacted? I don't know. I've had experiences, and I was wide awake, but I don't really know what to make of that.
I've woken up before, as a young teenager, to find myself pinned to the bed and I completely freaked out then. But I have read since that this is not an uncommon phenomenen and is a result of not being fully awake and still dreaming a bit. But, I've also had heavy furniture moved in the house when I've been alone. It wasn't me, so who was it? And I full on saw an 'apiration' in my room (at my folks house) a couple of times in my early 20's. It was a young man, smoking, just staring at me, but I didn't feel scared, just calm.
Most recently, just after OH and I had gone to bed, OH was setting his alarms on his phone etc, with his back to me whilst talking. I turned in the other direction to also set my alarm, and when I turned back there was a male figure sitting up right in the bed. At first glance I thought it was OH, but soon realised it wasn't (as he was still busy with his phone), and then I thought OH had just moved very quickly and was winding me up, but he wasn't. That's when I freaked out a bit. Can't guarantee that mind wasn't playing tricks though, as I had had a glass of wine that night and was very tired. Friends who have stayed at ours though, hear so many little unexplained noises that they are convinced we have ghosts.
I don't know. Other than that one (possible) experience, I've never noticed anything else. If they are there, the least they could do is some housework whilst we're at work! lolFebruary wins: Theatre tickets0 -

I get sleep paralysis fairly often. It's not fun. My friend has hallucinations when she gets it - eek!0 -

I can imagine! My experience was scary enough as it was and there was no hallucination.
My parents, bless them, arranged for the church priest to come and bless the house as at the time I was convinced it was a ghost and was refusing to sleep in my room alone! lolFebruary wins: Theatre tickets0
