What I should do instead is talk to the big boss on Tuesday, explain my position and see what her recommendations are - there could well be something glaringly obvious that I have missed.

Any idea how many other contenders for this post? If there are none you may be able to continue as normal without the stress and bother of an interview. By the time they go through public advertising, interviewing, notice periods etc it may be more than 6 months before your successor is ready for their first day in the role.

Thinking this through further; if there are other applicants who are not as capable as you - which they have to choose from - it will really burn them!

I have a lovely wife and 2 fantastic kids, .

Well, all this time I have followed your diary I always thought there were three kids, have you misplaced one in the shed? or packaged them up with their toys to an ebayer who got more than they bid for? (Buy toy, get kid free :rotfl:)

every free listing weekend I berate myself for not putting stuff on ebay.
Possibly wont be an issue after 13th May. Everybody to get 20 free listing per month and the end of 99p starts. May well see the demise of the FLW too. So list at your leisure Mr B

  • I'm a big fan of flylady.net. Her mantra is you are not behind, jump in where you are. Beating yourself up about not getting everything done just diverts you from seeing all that you have achieved. Not least inspiring me. It was while on holiday (last nov) that I found your diary, read it all the way through and am now making small op to my mortgage. Thank you and make sure you see the good that you're doing for you, your family and others.

Chev, no, I looked at all my options over the last 2 days and have spoken at length to the DWP without any luck.

MrB. Sometimes having a black/white approach can be useful. It allows you to clearly differentiate between situations.

Mr B (and Mrs B), good call. Your body is already letting you know this is a plan that suits you, and I reckon it will spill over into all other areas of your life. I can relate to a point - I went from being in touching distance of an Assistant Head position to being a stay at home mummy (via a period of maternity leave) for many reasons. I've since seen an improvement in my mental and physical health, my happiness levels and I have been able to support my husband in his career, which has flourished in the 2 years since I stopped work. This is no coincidence. I hope you find your same 'happy level' and it has a really positive impact on life chez Bloater, something tells me it will :)

Right - am having an early early night tonight as the weapon in my battle (or should that be crusade?) is to have a healthy rested mind.

Grand Theft Auto and Candy Crush do not help my mind and so are to be banished, and Facebook usage itself will be kept to a minimum. This forum will be my only online leisure - as it often springs up some useful advice as well.

Tomorrow will be a Bank holiday full of productivity - aside from silicone sealing some gaps in the house, I have a full day of marking and planning to do, scheduling of work through til the next half term, and I also intend cramming in some useful exercise and listing a couple of items on ebay.

And being back on here around this time tomorrow to report on the success of such endeavours.

    Hello Mr B,

I have only just found your diary and have now subscribed as I thought it was a really good inspiring read. It sounds like your house is similar to our house in that I am considered the high flyer and not hubby but that is ok as I don't think it is easy if you are both the same. I have come to value my OH and what he does for me to enable me to be as I am and do what I do. He is amazing - mainly for continuing to put up with me.

I wish you all the best in your endevours and look forward to being part of your journey. Good luck when you break it to the head and hope they will accept your suggestions for your future.

MrB. silicone sealant is only useful when used to seal baths, sinks, worktops and basins. For all other sealing jobs mastic is the best weapon of choice.

    Good things.
    - Woke up fully refreshed after a nine hour sleep - amazing how much clarity I felt.
    - Listed a couple of items on ebay.
    - Did ab and squat exercises
    - Sealed gaps in house and changed a couple of lightbulbs
    - Looked at the tasks that needed to be done for work and have realised that I can probably do them over the next six weeks
    - Sat out in the sun for a bit

    But then..
    - New found clarity combined with a comment from Mrs B this afternoon have led me to question the wisdom of my plan. On a purely financial scale it will mean waving goodbye to at least 12k (before tax) p.a. and will leave me stranded on the top of a lower scale with nowhere to go. Do I want to be the embittered old bloke who let promotion pass him by? How much of my reluctance to step up to the plate is genuine discomfort and how much was just total exhaustion compounded by the unhealthy lifestyle I was choosing. Could an alcohol-free fitter and more positive me actually do the higher level job and maintain my family responsibilities. Yikes I have a lot of thinking to do and not much time. Will sleep on it.
