Sometimes, just sometimes you have got to know when to take a step back and your time has now apparently come.

Right, will now slink back to my diary.

I read this diary but rarely post as I cannot offer any advice. However, your post struck a chord, especially as my wife currently has two very different job interviews lined up. One of which she will have to make her mind up whether she really is a "high flyer" or not should she be offered it. I wish you luck in both your new roles.

Congratlations to you Mr B. It takes guts to admit that you are on a treadmill, becoming something that everyone else thinks that you ought to be. The ability to accept that you are best 'one step below' and want to be there, means that you achieve what you want without the added stress of having to perform. You can be who you want to be, and you can be good at it.

I wish you all the best for your epiphany. Make the most of it. Not everyone is lucky enough to experience it. Or if they do, to act on it.
Still striving to be mortgage free before I get to a point I can't enjoy it.

  • I think your decision is a very MSE one. I know that I am most likely to fritter away money and self indulge when unhappy or stressed. Deciding to give you and your family a better life will pay dividends financially as well as in other ways. I can't wait to see the progress.

I've only discovered your diary today, and have found it captivating and fun. It has made me smile at a time when things haven't been great for me, and given me some hope. I read the first bit, middle and a few posts at the end. It is inspiring on many levels, and the fact that you love and are talented at writing comes through clearly. Go for it! I would read a novel written by you any day. :)

Actually MrB. Easter appears to be just the right time for an Epiphany.

My quandary involves whether or not I can take the job I was offered yesterday as it is monthly paid and I don't have enough savings to see me through to my first payday (and I am unable to get a loan, credit card or overdraft due to my credit history).

Hi Patman, is there not some form of transitional money you can get from the DSS to cover this? Or what about some form of help in the form of food at least from a local church or the Salvation Army. Also if you say to your creditors and utilities about changing to monthly pay in advance of things bouncing perhaps they will give you some lee way. Can't hurt to ask
    good luck

Mr B congratulations. It takes guts to admit you have flown too high. My OH had to do it in his last job. He is really good at what he does, but is a useless (his words not mine) man manager, and when they made him one, he hated it!

Strikes a chord with me too. It has taken me quite a bit of reading on MSE to know what I need to do. It may not be easy or quick but at least I know which direction I need to head now. :)

As always, thanks for the support and advice. The major hurdle I have to overcome is my black/white all/nothing approach to life. Even with my new found clarity about where I want to go with my career if I put it in my usual direct terms I could be cutting my nose to spite the hand that feeds me. What I should do instead is talk to the big boss on Tuesday, explain my position and see what her recommendations are - there could well be something glaringly obvious that I have missed. I then have to extend this approach to the other challenges, just because I don't go for a run at 5am doens't mean the entire day is trashed exercise-wise - there's no excuses for not doing the Abdominal exercises later in the day, nor indeed the Wii Fit. And any thing I can do to save money is better than nothing - creating massive lists of unfeasible tasks is just setting me up to fail - every free listing weekend I berate myself for not putting stuff on ebay. It's baby steps I need to take. If I get something done then excellent, if I don't (then as the last three years have shown) it ain't necessarily going to be the end of the world. It's time to chill - me as a whirling dervish hasn't solved any of the issues.
