Fon offered a free (as in free beer) wireless router, with free postage; only you had to use their network, couldnt alter the firmware etc. It was mentioned on digg.com a few weeks back now, might stil be active . . .

The Techie board is for posting techie questions, answers, hints etc. And for expanding on the replies given. That is what crispeater did. But you and superscaper are ridiculing him by having a cheap laugh at his expence.

Oh dear, I was laughing at espresso's comment on being a strange router, and it was funny when I clicked on the link expecting a router. I was laughing at the link expecting a router, taking your logic for a second, have I actually anywhere specifically said I was laughing AT crispeater. Of course not because I wasn't. You're taking this far too seriously and falsely accusing me of ridiculing someone when I've not made a single comment about that person.

No, they don't. If you are on ADSL you must make sure that it clearly states that it does have a modem built-in.

    As an example..

This item does not mention having a modem in it

    wheras

    http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/52244/rb/25083838463
    This item does

You are wrong, all adsl routers have a modem built-in, the DG834G does have a modem built-in, and both your links point to the same router.

A Cable/DSL Router can be used on ADSL - - ONLY if the ADSL modem you have also supports a direct Ethernet/RJ45 typical network connector....

Hence the DSL portion in its the title of CABLE/DSL Router equipment.

So, if you purchase a CABLE Router and think its wrong, it may not be the case or a major drawback. Check your ADSL modem equipment ability thoroughly. Also, some ISP's can provide Ethernet based ADSL modems from installation or later, on request. Again...look into these aspects.

Pros and cons both way in all honesty (managing 2x items & £££ power/all-in-one aspects/future ISP provider changes/Flexibility/Performance...etc), lots of aspects and opinions to consider - But generally from a networking and CPU processing technical low level view, the Ethernet based connectivity from your ISP is always better. Most people in general usage wont need to care about this....but is worth remembering for those who do or are perhaps starting out on the home networking journey!!

    Happy networking!

  • I was told by Telewest tonight (Weds 7 Feb) that the free router offer has now finished. Apparently it was only open to people upgrading their broadband in December and January and they now don't have any routers left to send out.

If someone knows different please shout but this is what I was told tonight.

See the earlier posts.... misleading and unclear.

MIMO devices rule by the way when dealing with Wireless area blackspots!

Also.....NEVER EVER use the DMZ IP unless you know what your doing....AND No it doesnt fix all your networking problems....and YES it is like leaving your front door wide open with a neon sign above flashing away saying idiots live here!

There are waaaaaay too many networking faux-paus out there! Educate yourselves on all this please people!!

The offer closed on the 5th of Feb, it was posted on the Blueyonder newsgroups that Monday was the last day, as there are going to be other offers soon afterr the re-branding to Virgin goes through tomorrow.

The offer had been going for several months, certainly before December.

It was available to anyone on 4Mbit or 10Mbit or anyone upgrading to either of those speeds, on request. For the free router you are then tied to TW for another 12 months, though you don't have to stay on the same speed.

The do have some of these left as they are still available to purchase, though they may stick on 'Now Virgin Media' stickers on the box.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

I say try Ebay, bargains to be had

On 2 occassions I have picked up a Netgear WGT624 108Mps router and the Netgear USB key both for under £50 delivered, they also come with a years warranty

This is one of the best routers for cable customers and setup is easy peasy

I've just called telewest (been with them for years, despite appalling service and very expensive) and was told I was already on cheap BB at £19.99, which they wouldn't reduce, despite me threatening to leave.

They also refused to send me a wireless router, despite threatening to take my business elsewhere.

Their customer service stinks, and it's getting worse. The lady in the call centre was really rude.

I must have been lucky i got mine last week . Have to agree customer service was shocking unsure if maybe they are being paid off as part of the shake up so maybe understandable??.

They tried to charge me for usb adapter for my pc as it's not wireless enabled but i threatened to go to SKY and they gave me it for nowt eventually. They never mentioned anything about renewing my contract so gona try to get a cheaper rate now also.. :) I'm quite happy to go to SKY but never had a problem with cable broadband and unlimted downloads
