There are real occasions for using the DMZ but as mentioned, it has risks, it puts the specified IP address (DMZ) on the internet (just like a USB modem). But, a good software firewall (and no, not the XP firewall either) will plug all the unnecessary port attacks allowing the real traffic through.
The DMZ has its uses and those that use them properly are certainly not idiots, quite the opposite.
Had to re-read your post to take in fully what you were saying....
Got there in the end, I agree with you and your point is good, but needed to be clearer ! Yes, using the DMZ is like essentially plugging in a USB modem directly....additionally, just also like adding a cable modem directly, or dial-up etc....
The point is, using the DMZ leaves you wide open and what you are doing is essentially directly disregarding all the hardware firewall aspects that your router (wireless/modem/etc...) may have.
Then enabling your software firewall to me seems a little odd ! You've taken away the hardware firewall, then switch on the software firewall !? Why do that......just manage the hardware firewall aspects better and your better protected all round with the benefit of less comms overhead and CPU load = faster more responsive machine.
IMHO, Software firewalls are all very poor solutions to a serious need for a hardware firewall, but ultimately better than having nothing at all....
For those learning the home networking ropes, a firewall is like having your own personal bouncer with a guest list managing the traffic that is permitted to enter your network. "If your names not down - your not coming in..." - Essentially! Nothing comes in unless you permit it, and you may then direct it to all or a range of systems (IP's).
Primary use for the average home user adding a device IP to the DMZ range would probably be okay for games consoles, or IP based security cameras...or....again,....if you really know what your doing!
(I'll leave it to someone else to explain DMZ!)

Hi All,
I have believe the offer finished on 5th Feb (sorry for posting after this date, I wasn't aware it had finished by then, I'd only got mine on Monday!), but I believe Virgin are meant to be starting another similar offer some time soon.
Cheers

I'll vouch for DSL Depot. I bought a Speedtouch 585 from them in November for £26 plus £4 delivery. It came boxed with all the docs and cables etc. plus they give a 30 day warranty in case it's duff.
The 585 is better than the 580 IMHO as you can tweak it with the DMT tool and perhaps squeeze a bit more out of your up to 8 Meg connection, worth the extra £1.01!This site has saved me a fortune :money: ...it's also cost me a fortune!

Just a bit of input from my experience.
Don't just go for the cheapest available! Wireless technology can on occasions be a little unreliable and prone to the odd problem.
I went for a Belkin router about 3 years ago and on the odd occasion I've had a problem (2 or 3 times in that period) their 24 hour free telephone support has been superb and has got me surfing again in no time. This really is worth it's weight in gold particularly if you're not a comptuer geek as there are sooo many setting you can tweak. A friend of mine bought a much cheaper router and guess what.. no telephone support and when he had problems he just couldn't sort it and ended up getting a Belkin.0 -

If anyone is on Telewest Cable 4mbit or 10mbit (or Virgin Media from Thursday) you can get a free Netgear Wireless router if you call 150 from your Telewest phone and ask them! All we were told is if we cancelled broadband within 12 month, we'd have to pay tht £40 for the router, otherwise, no problem!
Arrived very quickly too and works fine!
For some reason, I believe NTL (or ex NTL customers) can't get the free router for some reason, yet anyway, but it may be worth ringing to ask!
Cheers

It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -
For the specifications see the following link about this award winning 54 Mbps Wireless ADSL Modem Firewall Router:
http://www.netgear.co.uk/extra/h_wirelessrouter_dg834g.php?type=h
Get this free when you migrate your ADSL broadband to http://www.eclipse.net.uk from your existing ADSL provider using a MAC (a code which your existing provider should issue for free). Here is a direct link to the offer http://www.eclipse.net.uk/index.cfm?id=broadband_res. I migrated to the £14.99 8MB Unlimited download Evolution broadband package without a hitch a few months ago and can say that the service is fast and reliable.
The 12 month contract for broadband start from £14.99 month with the first month rental free. Price plans depends on what performance levels/download limits you require.
What's more is that if you want to you can use my referral code "CHANCEI" when signing up and I will split half my referral payment from eclipse (£30) and pay you £15 to have a free router!
To take advantage of this you must be migrating using a MAC and reference my referral code (CHANCEI), not have been in a contract with eclipse in the previous 12 months and I will send your £15 via paypal after I received the referral payment from eclipse sent after you have paid 2 months of line rental.
You can still use my referral code if you are not migrating and signing up to broadband for the first time, however you will only receive a USB modem, no free 1st month and my referral payment is reduced to £15 so you will receive £7.50.
Please private message or mail me if you would like to take up my referral offer in addition to the normal eclipse free wireless router offer.
Happy wireless surfing!
