  • So then, have I bought the wrong wireless router (Netgear DB834G) to hook up with the cable modem just installed by Virgin Media?

BTW a google search brought up this thread while I was googling for the reason for my set-up not working  .

I was about to recommend it to someone but can't find many reviews on the Linksys WAG200G. Has anyone here installed them yet?
  • Looking at the Amazon Linksys offer, as I'll need a wireless router for a new laptop.

I'm on BT with Virgin and currently have a Desktop with a basic Virgin provided broadband modem.

Question: could I continue to use the current modem (upstairs BT socket) as is and then use a new (linksys) ADSL modem for the laptop (downstairs BT socket)? Using two modems effectively.

Or would I just have to use the one modem... and if so what is the best option for setting up the desktop. Wire to a port on the modem (I did instal an unused network card in the PC sometime ago) or would I need to get a wireless adaptor for the PC? Any recommendations.

I suppose this is something faced by a lot of people new. An old PC connected to the Internet that will still be used and the laptop with its inbuilt wireless card.

    What is the best solution?

The router will replace your current modem and also provide a wireless signal to be used with a wireless enabled laptop or other wireless devices. You can connect your PC by ethernet LAN wire to the back of the router and don't need wireless for the PC as it sits next to the router.

The Linksys WAG200G is now £35.63 from Amazon incl free delivery.

Edit 30 March 07: Amazon uk price has now gone up to £39.99 incl del.
