Still don't think you can beat the stuff at DSL Depot. I recommend them regularly. This site has saved me a fortune :money: ...it's also cost me a fortune!

Just wondering if anyone has seen any new offers on dsl wireless routers and hopefully keep this post alive
I have 3 invites to get a Fon wireless router for 20 euros instead of 39 euros under the Fonera gets Fonera scheme. See https://www.fon.com. This is a wireless network sharing scheme. Fon are a big company financially sponsored by Google and Skype. There are other forum posts about this if you search for Fon or Fonera. They used to be available for free, but sadly that promotion has now ended, and the new promo is this one.
Please note:- You have to share your broadband with other fon users using a different subnet, but they cannot see your private network. You will be able to see a history of who accesses your network, so there is accountability. However, in 3 months, number of people who used my router = 0 (leafy London suburb street).
- You get free access to other people with Fon routers. For example, I will be using Fon hotspots in Benidorm next week.
- You should check with your ISP T&Cs if they will allow you to share your broadband. Mine does (https://www.bethere.co.uk) so long as I do not charge for it.
- You will require an ethernet router to plug it into. It does not work on its own.
- The Fon shared (public) network has no encryption, however the private network (your home network) has good WPA/PSK encryption. People using the public network cannot see your private network, nor can you see other people's computers when you are travelling.
Those are the major points, see the Fon site for full details. I mentioned this in a thread about borrowing neighbour's broadband before spotting this.
With regard to security when you access an unencrypted wireless network such as Fon, or at airports etc, you should be aware of possible threats, such as a fake "Evil Twin" network or the danger of sending data over a wireless network in unencrypted form. When I am travelling, I protect myself by accessing my PC at home using Remote Desktop or a similar free product called Logmein https://www.logmein.com. Hamachi https://www.hamachi.cc is another useful tool, it is a free VPN, which will allow you to access files securely across the web. Both products are mentioned elsewhere in these forums. Thus when I use a public wireless network, I perform all secure operations such as banking via my home PC, which I leave on.
The router is also handy if you have friends with laptops who visit you. You can create a half a dozen or so user names and passwords just for them, so they can browse the web via the public network without having access to your secure home network.
If you would like a half price invite after reading all this, please PM me with your email address! I have 2 to get rid of. Once you accept, you will be given a few invites, according to the current promotion.0
