I am totally confused with all this! Having a senior moment!

I run MAC OS X but my partner runs Windows - what do we need to buy to go wireless? We have ASDL.

A Wireless ADSL Modem Router is the easiest for you, plus both your computers will also need wireless cards (which may already be built-in, or may not).

Did crispeater say that it was? looks more like he is trying to help the people like me that needs to know, that you dont just need a cheap wireless router but alst a card to receive the signal. Thanks crispeater you have been very helpful .Just a pity the thread police like espresso is pulling up all the people that aint posting a link to a wireless router.

Also the sense of crispeater's post was that it was a router. I took it to be a router and assumed it was until I looked at the link because of espresso's response to it. Certainly not made clear that it was an adaptor card and for any newbies the lack of that clarification may confuse things further.

ADSL routers are required for BT phone lines. These have a modem built-in.
    Not always.

Do all routers have a modem built into them? I can only see that the Linksys states that it has a modem in it.
No, they don't. If you are on ADSL you must make sure that it clearly states that it does have a modem built-in.

    As an example..

This item does not mention having a modem in it

I install wifi kit. Avoid the Linksys kit if a long range is required, as they do not come supplied with an external aerial. Consequently, their range is poor. Netgear & Buffalo wifi kit is much better for transmission range.

I haven't had any complaints with Linksys routers, I wouldn't install them in peoples homes if they were causing problems, I've not had any problems with my own Linksys.

Newer Netgears have been fine too. We only really get complaints from people who have Belkin routers.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

I've just called telewest (been with them for years, despite appalling service and very expensive) and was told I was already on cheap BB at £19.99, which they wouldn't reduce, despite me threatening to leave.

They also refused to send me a wireless router, despite threatening to take my business elsewhere.

Their customer service stinks, and it's getting worse. The lady in the call centre was really rude.

While there is no excuse for bad CS (which I never had in the ten years I was with TW :)) I don't think this 'free router' was ever intended for the mass market. I think it might have been a retentions tool or something similar. However, since one person got one and posted it onto a Forum, now everyone thinks they're entitled to one.

Of course, I could be wrong :)

Completely different The Freebie board is for posting Freebies and discussing the Freebies.

The Techie board is for posting techie questions, answers, hints etc. And for expanding on the replies given. That is what crispeater did. But you and superscaper are ridiculing him by having a cheap laugh at his expence.
