Depends on your contract I think. I'm not sure they're obliged to pay. The court service pays your reasonable costs (including travel) but not your normal hourly rate.
havent seen a contract yet - only just started.
Theres something on the form about loss of earnings? if employer doesnt pay me then might the court pay less than my normal hourly wage?
so i could be out 2 weeks of wages for doing jury duty?0 -
GO and explain it, they may well have had this situation before and appreciate that it is a duty.
As you have just started they may consider that its is not such a problem.0 -

People trying to get out of doing what is right or by claiming they are owed something for doing nothing seriously get my goat!
If someone committed a crime against you, I bet you would demand justice?
Well you cannot have justice unless you are part of the process.
Do the jury service. Shut up moaning about it!Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

Some employers pay while on jury service others don't. If they don't you can claim a daily allowance which has a maximum amount so may not be as much as your wage if you have a good wage.Lost my soulmate so life is empty.
I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

If you are on the electoral roll and are under 70 (I think) then you can be called. However if you have a health problem then you can be excused, you would just need to provide medical evidence.Lost my soulmate so life is empty.

Your employer is obliged to allow you the time off; they have no choice. They cannot treat you unfairly because of your service. You are allowed to claim up to sixty-four pounds a day in loss of earnings (half this if the day's service is less than four hours), if less than twelve days. If it goes on for twelve days or more, you can claim up to one hundred and thirty pounds (or half if less than four hours). This must be supported by a certificate of loss of earnings from your employer (the courts service will supply the blank certificate). You can claim for meals as well and accommodation if you are sequestered. You can also claim for travelling expenses.
With all that aside, your employer could also write to HMCS and request that you be released from service as you have just started the job and are required to attend training courses etc. This is often considered to reasonable grounds to avoid jury service. But, you are likely to be called again in the near future and the same excuse will not wash. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0
