Given your rant it may not be the Jury duty which puts off a potential employer. Please feel free to emigrate.
  • I really want to do jury duty. If it was possible I'd volunteer.

There's your "special reason." You can't be on a jury if you have done jail time.

Not necessarily. If the sentence was for less than five years, and completed more than ten years ago, you're not exempt.

Reminds me of the one and only time I was ever inside a courtroom (as a witness) and the trial was halted after the defendant, who had been accused of breaking into my house while we were all in bed, recognised someone on the jury because they were in Brixton prison together!

Well, considering the sentences being given out for the riots, it stands to be a good chance that will be the case.

I was called last year for Jury Duty, arrived the day i was told too and sat and sat and sat, it was 3 days before i was actually called to sit on a case. i was annoyed as being self employed time is money.
in all it took 5 days out of my schedule, but i did mamanged to get several good business contacts and 4 new hosting clients, so not all a loss after all

Well done, I am glad you were able to turn it around a bit.
Here after the first day you have to phone a number and put a code in to see if you are needed after the first day.

I did jury service twenty-three years ago and it was quite boring. We didn't have the option to call in then. I did manage to get through several books, many of which I had been promising myself to read for many years. The first case was a crock, the sitting jury (except for me) didn't want to be responsible for sending a man to jail, so let him off. The second case was a bit more interesting. For some odd reason, one juror was a litle too keen (if you know what I mean) on acquitting the defendant, even though he was obvious guilty. He managed to persuade half the jury to his cause, but the rest of his could clearly see he was guilty beyond a reasonable doubt (bang to rights actually).

Am I going mad? I'm sure there was a big dialogue with Lessthanimpressed yesterday. Where did he and his posts go? Have I missed a stushie?

You're not going mad. I was part of that and my posts have gone too. Perhaps they were reported. It happens, I guess.

Both yourself and GlynD should be ashamed for turning a serious thread into a venue of innuendo and tea discussion.

OP, have you decided on what you are doing yet?

I apologise to the OP and other posters for my unreasonable behaviour. ;)
