Jury duty, why should I?

It doesnt surprise me that juries spend a lot of time hanging aorund many defendants and solicitors know how to play the system by dragging things out and then entering a guilty plea right at the end - therefore wasting a huge amount of public money
the crazy thing is that they get applauded for it and not given an even bigger punishment for purposelly wasting the tiem of the courts and the enforcement authrotiy and witnesses.0 -
It is called Duty for a reason. Part of being a citizen of this country we have rights and obligations. It is part of being in a civilized society.
People trying to get out of doing what is right or by claiming they are owed something for doing nothing seriously get my goat!
If someone committed a crime against you, I bet you would demand justice?
Well you cannot have justice unless you are part of the process.
Do the jury service. Shut up moaning about it!0 -

being a citizen of this country is also speaking the language and not American0 -

It took quite a bit of explaining to my boss though, as I work in Western Europe although I live (and am employed and paid by) the UK section of my company. He's Dutch and they don't have a jury system in the Netherlands! How odd, is it just the UK that has this then?Truth always poses doubts & questions. Thanks Mrs Arcanum. I've gone about it the other way and told my boss not to send me anywhere for those two weeks. It'll be a nice rest! Not sure how it would work if I end up on a three monther, like a mad ax murderer or something, although I think you can appeal against them if it's going to have a real impact on your job.2013 NSD challenge 3/100

Yes you can submit a pain and grief statement if it is a long one.
I think there were about 25 of us called up on mine So plenty of chances to escape. It was the ones with parental responsibilities who were first excused though. Then the self employed.0 -

Just to say, when I was made redundant, for the first time ever since leaving school, I am 46, I searched for jobs for about 10 hours a day.
saying that as you did is really quite condescending!
I was relentless, and never ever stopped and found work after 3 months. Now I have a pretty decent job, but if I had sat on my rear as you kind of pertain this guy is doing, then one would never find employment.
I get his point too. You put your CV on as many sites and agencies as possible, they practically DEMAND you do this interview when they say. tell them you cannot as you are on jury duty and you are likely to have that interview spot removed from your sights. Whether you can or cannot do the job isn't in question, but if employers must fill a job spec by a certain date and you cant help them do that due to circumstance out of your control, then you think they care?...they will look elsewhere they will not wait.....to the OP ...you have my sympathy and empathy
And please don't try and make out that the guy is getting benefits or some sort of scrounger. That's what NIC's are for. And before you bite my head off, THAT was information told to me by the job centre and the benefits agency.
I hated it and felt really low, but getting a job is a job in itself!0 -
Just got jury summons letter (coincidence as well since mum was talking bout her jury duty just the other day!) Nervous!!
Going to have a word with my boss tommrow - give her as much notice as i can ... dont quite know what to say! your employer should pay you when on jury duty shouldnt they?0 -
Depends on your contract I think. I'm not sure they're obliged to pay. The court service pays your reasonable costs (including travel) but not your normal hourly rate.0
