Jury duty, why should I?

"Jury Duty"? "Citation"?
You sure you're in the UK?
I would love to do Jury Service, but have never been called. Even my husband (not born in the UK) has been called, but I haven't.
I'll be too old soon!

for those that moan about UK but have not been anywhere else....
the grass is not always greener you know.0 -
Anyone not smart enough to get out of jury service probably isn't smart enough to do jury service.0

the thing is, since jury service mainly involves sitting around, there would be plenty of time to get forms filled out and go through every paper to check for jobs. it may actually be helpful to have that much spare time in this situation! if you have a laptop, take it and get applications written..... everyone wins! simples!
it's also just something that is part of being a British citizen.... contributing to society and all that (not Dave's 'BIG' society i hasten to add!). complaining that this country is awful will just end up with you being attacked (and actually, making those comments means you probably deserve it!). time to suck it up - you may well find it an eye opening experience that ends up being positive. if not, then you can whinge about it for eternity while making plans to leave the UK:happyhear0 -
I was called last year for Jury Duty, arrived the day i was told too and sat and sat and sat, it was 3 days before i was actually called to sit on a case. i was annoyed as being self employed time is money.
in all it took 5 days out of my schedule, but i did mamanged to get several good business contacts and 4 new hosting clients, so not all a loss after all0 -
If you have £15,000 of Student Loan then you probably went to University graduating 2001-2008 or some point in between. It was your choice to go to University and if you did not gain more than a piece of paper when you were there, you didn't do it right. By studying you gained a huge host of skills; teamed with work experience these are extremely valuable in the workplace. A lot of people still work from bottom up even with a degree. I'm not saying it's not worth anything, but your success depends on you. If you don't earn over £15,000 per year you don't pay off any student loan (although it does accrue interest still). You might never pay it off. I no longer earn over £15,000 so don't pay the 9% over £15,000 off towards my loan plus interest either, I'm not worried; this is life. I made the most of my university experience. I was happy to contribute to my own education for the opportunities it offered me. I never felt I was owed anything, I feel that if you want to get something you work hard for it. If you won't work hard from it don't have it. There are plenty of jobs out there although not necessarily of the type people think they feel they should be doing. I feel that if you are able to work you should and if that's a call centre/ vegetable picking/ factory work then you should do whatever you are capable of doing because you should work if you can. I would still and have done all these things on minimum wage and before to get myself the things I wanted and have never had benefits (except tax credits and child benefit which just about everyone with a child gets).
I think you should take responsibility for your own actions; if you degree isn't what you want, if your life isn't what you want then that is sad, but no one other than you can do anything about it. We can't do anything for you. I'm sad when I hear people have a go at this country and are still willing to take from it. It's the takers who stop the nice people having access to things they need to make their lives that little bit easier or better- all those things are being cute. Why not write a letter to the Jury service saying you don't want to do it because you feel miserable and disappointed. They will probably excuse you because you'd not be able to do what they need you to do such as being fair and considerate of others; if you can't do this then be honest.Sealed Pot Challenge #1666 - up for raising as much as poss0 -
I did Jury Service once, first trial I was on lasted 3 days, the second trial called midway through the my second (and last week) went on for 3 Months!
I loved it though. 4 hours in court a day, getting regularly "sent home" whilst they discuss point of law so plenty of time off.
I had a letter saying I never have to do it again due to the length of the trial I was one.
I was spokesman too so I announced the verdict.
Loved it, facinating viewing...0 -
I reckon as there are so many who don't want to do it, you should be able to volunteer if you do!

Is there any legal reason why I have to pay attention whilst a juror? If not I will happily tell them I won't pay attention.
The judge will happily tell you that he finds you to be in contempt of the court. You will then be able to spend as much time as you like at Her Majesty's Pleasure until your attitude changes."When the people fear the government there is tyranny, when the government fears the people there is liberty." - Thomas Jefferson0
