    Sorry forgot that...

    Total 515720
    Limit 1255412
    Peak 701804

When I tried to open another window, the total commit charge shot up to circa 570,000.

Just a thought, I won't be able to upgrade Kaspersky to new version because I can't download anything!

The man from Orange said he was going to send me a new router, I just presumed he meant the same thing that I have now, but perhaps he didn't. What is the difference? Does it still go into the telephone point and the back of the computer?

Yes you'll be likely to get a router instead of a modem. It still connects via the telephone, but connects to the computer differently. It'll be clear from the instructions.

    A few of the differences:
    • It'll be mains powered
    • Multiple computers can be connected to it (via ethernet cable, or wireless)
    • More lights!!
    • It'll keep running even if you turn off the computer
    • +/- Supports faster speeds (ADSL2+)
The main difference is security - it'll have a basic hardware firewall that will block or hide you from a lot of attacks. Using a USB modem is like surfing the net naked - leaves the computer exposed to all sorts.

USB modems are ridiculous; never saw them in Australia but see them all the time here. Anyone with unpatched XP and a USB modem is just asking to be infected with a worm.

Sounds like the good old Speedtouch 330 frog modem.

and you have to download Dr Speedtouch to get your stats.
There is also a note about them not working above 4Mbps.

Hopefully Orange are sending you a nice new router to replace the nasty thing.

Anyhoo, here is the link, select speedtouch 330.

A work colleague was telling me yesterday to download Google Chrome and have that as my internet browser. She did it and said the difference is incredible, it is just so fast.

Trouble is of course I can't download anything at the moment.

Is Google Chrome a better bet than Internet Explorer? I suppose there are just loads more people using IE so that would make it slower.

Yes it does look like a frog! Could it just decide to slow everything down though for no apparent reason? It's not as if it has stopped working completely.

My only concern with uninstalling Kaspersky is that I won't have any internet security in place then, so will be exposed:eek:

Shall I have a go at putting on the newer version and then uninstalling the old one, which is the way they say to do it? (if it will install the new one of course)

Closed, you seem to think it is definitely the Kaspersky causing the problem, but they are the most highly regarded anti virus company.

Should I switch on the Windows Firewall, which is of course currently off so it doesn't clash with the Kaspersky one. Do Microsoft do any anti virus protection?

Put it this way - if you can't even download a tiny file, then you won't likely be able to download viruses/malware either.
