Since yesterday my computer has gone from being quite slow to barely moving at all - it takes 1-2 mins for a page to open.
It appears to be continually trying to do a Kaspersky update, but only gets to about 23% of the download and then goes back to 0% - could this be the cause?
I have looked on the Kaspersky site but just don't know how to go about fixing this.
Many thanks

I remember that you received lots of advice regarding buying a new computer last month!! So, you still have your old Dell 5000 - in fact that is still a very capable machine for basic everyday use. You were experiencing problems before so just wonder how far you went in cleaning the machine up?
Also your current problem may be a slow internet speed - might be worth running 'Speedtest' and check this out first. Then use a quick cleaner such as CCleaner, run Malwarebytes, remove Kaspersky using their own removal tool and reload it.
I have known Kaspersky to cause a few problems on an XP machine but I'm sure these are ironed now with the 2012 version.0 -
If you're running Windows, if you press cntrl+alt+del and view the taskmanager and then the performance tab, is the CPU usage high?
If you click on the processes tab and then click on the CPU tab to sort highest/lowest usage, is there anything listed there that has high CPU usage?
Is the hard drive busy when the computer is very slow? If you reboot and select safe mode (reboot, then press F8 when the machine is booting up to bring up the menu) is the computer slow?
If you are sure that Kaspersky is causing the slowness have you tried disabling or uninstalling Kaspersky and then reinstalling?0 -
Delete kaspersky. Try Avira , free, for the time being and see how it runs.
I'd then run a full malwarebytes scan.
You can always re-install kaspersky in the future. Just because you pay for something doesn't mean you have to use it.
At least this is an easy and fairly quick way of seeing if kaspersky is the prob.0 -
Oh well I have now discovered that Kaspersky is not the problem because eventually it did manage to reach 100% for the updates and computer is still crawling along.
Please does anyone have the link to download the free version of Malwarebytes - think that could be worth a try.
Yes I do still have this old Dell heap of c**p and will certainly be buying something more up to date very shortly.Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time :eek:0 -

Is it just the internet that is slow? Or does it take an unusually long time for programs to load as well?
Try to differentiate between the speed of your internet connection, and the speed of the computer itself.

When running Malwarebytes (mbam), run a Quick scan.
The quick scan will find any active malware running that mbam is capable of detecting. The only things that the full scan will find over the quick scan are benign traces of malware - harmless without the full body of the infection.
It's also at it's most potent in normal mode as certain technology it uses for detection and removal isn't effective in safe mode (the drivers don't load).0 -
Thank you,
I have tried downloading Malwarebytes twice and each time it takes about 20 mins, then I get a message that the set up files are corrupted.Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time :eek:0 -
See if you can download this. Save it to your desktop if you can.

As I said, it's still a very capable machine. It's the XP operating system that has got corrupted over the years and if it were reinstalled and another 1Gb PC 3200 DDR memory added, you would be pleasantly surprised.0
