Fray Bentos pie vent!

These pies are frequently on offer (2 for 1etc.) making them, in effect, £1 each, make some estimates i.e. cost of manufacture, transport, profit, wages, tax, advertising, packaging, subtract all these costs from the pound and that is what you have to buy "steak" then look at the price of real steak.
Amazing really that for next to nothing you dont get a premium high grade steak pie.0 -
Although you do fid them in meat too not just meat products. All muscle has veins in to fuel the body. I think its a hazard of being a carnivore!!0

I wouldn't expect premium free range Aberdeen Angus fillet steak pieces in a pie0

I'm of the opinion that it's better to have an animal born and reared, in good healthy conditions for food consumption, than for them to have never been born. At least they experience precious life.Amber_Babies wrote: »Although you do fid them in meat too not just meat products. All muscle has veins in to fuel the body. Yeppp. I didn't have much fun pulling out the veins in a turkey leg I'd done in the slow cooker. There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.0 -

Not a Frey Bentos one, certainly.
I do agree with the comments that essentially say "It's what you get for being a carnivore". Like finding a bone in your fish, or for that matter a slug on your lettuce leaf. Unpleasant, sure, not something I'm anxious to have happen to me too often, but a part of life
These days a lot of people tend to think of meat on their table as being some kind of miracle that doesn't really relate to those cute little piggies or calves or whatever that they once saw on that tv show about that farm.If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything0 -

True, but doesn't that come down to the government and the children’s TV programming? Animals are personified, meaning to a child that they would effectively be eating their 'friends'. If this was stopped and children grew up like people did on a farm years ago then they would know exactly what they were eating and not think that it was some kind of miracle.0 -
It's a mis-leading name for that pie.
It's called a Steak and Ale, but only contains beef.
Steak is a type of beef, specifically cut from muscle, beef is any part of the animal.
I had one of these yesterday, my son found it in the cupboard, forgot I had it.
They are now called Boozy Beef pies so someone must've pulled them on it!I'm a Nanny again! 23rd April 2012

I guess if you eat products with mechanically recovered meat your bound to get some other bits.
MRM has to be labelled separately if used, it does not count towards the 'meat' content of a product as it is so processed it can no longer be considered 'meat'. If the can doesn't say MRM, it isn't MRM. MRM is really a kind of chicken carcass paste, after all the real meat has been removed.

We were actually talking last night about making our own pie last night after it happenedAt least that way there hopefully won't be any nasty surprises! My OH likes the Fray Bentos pastry though as it doesn't go too thick and flaky like some other ones do but can experiment
Good idea! You could even save some time by making a big casserole first and then using the leftovers for a pie. See your butcher and ask what cheaper cuts they could sell you, they may be cheap but will always be lovely quality. I like to get a joint of brisket (great price) , cook it really slowly and have a roast + leftovers. Have fun!:DApril 2016 Mortgage- £160,000.00
