Christmas Escape from Mother in Law & Stepson

Options
Hi there.

I am going to take my husband and myself off away overseas at Christmas because I can't bear another Christmas day sitting at a table with his mother (a strict vegan) and my 21 year old stepson.

Going away over that period is really expensive. Does anybody have any ideas on how to save money? I've been looking at flights to Florida.. and its coming up at an extortionate £800 per person! just for the flights.

I've got a Christmas piggybank where I put away spare coins, in the belief that it will all add up by December :-)

You may be able to save money by flying on the less attractive dates - if you travel either well before christmas or on other days that are not as popular such as the 26th...

Anyway, does your stepson have somewhere else to spend Christmas, and what about your mother in law? Unless they have other people to celebrate with it is quite selfish to remove your husband away from them over Christmas?

If going away is too expensive, can you celebrate with your family instead?

is your husband ok with this plan, does he dislike it as much as you

if so, then dont book anywhere, just tell them you're going away and park the car away from the house if necessary

if you really need to book away, i always think its nice to go somewhere cold, maybe rent a cottage in scotland or something and snuggle up with whisky and cake

It might be cheaper to just tell the truth!

Chances are they will only try to arrange a 'mock christmas' get together for a date near to when you are away. Then you have the ludicrous expense of holidaying at the most expensive time of year and STILL have to either meet up or confront the issue

The step son is a man now, not selfish at all to go away if you've faced the same faces every christmas for the last decade or so.

Maybe go somewhere in England? There are plenty of nice places around and will be half the price of traveling abroad at that time of year.
Even still, Maybe spend it with your family this year for a change?

We always alternate Christmas. My parents house one year, Our house with the IL's the next that way its fair and the others dont feel put out that we're spending more time with one set then the other.

  • Do they live with you? Is your OH in agreement with you?

I would just say we're doing our own thing this year even if it does cause an argument it will be worth it in the long run.

Yes, really. If he can stay with his mum/that part of the family then all is well. But if not, then imagine being 21 years old and alone for Christmas?

Then gain, perhaps he is delighted at not having to spend Christmas with stepmum ;-)
