  • Hi Everyone - I need some suggestions please.

I'm leaving on Saturday night to fly to Scotland and I don't know what food to take with me that will last for the entire journey -

Leaving my house at some bloody awful hour - 2am for a check in at 3am. First flight is 5.30am and I land in Amsterdam at 9.00am-ish. I then have a 5 hour layover before my onward flight to Glasgow, arriving at 3.25pm

No idea what to take with me apart from the obvious cut up veggies and lots of water. I can also make myself an omelette and take that cold but it's certainly not going to fill me up.

looking forward to hearing lots of ideas

Well done everyone! Those sundried tomato chickens look yum from Asda Deb. Too much garlic and pepper for me though sadly :(

I've just put in stuffed chicken - cannot wait it feels like a total treat. Also got smoked salmon for tomorrow lunch - nom nom nom! Really loving my little find from Sainsburys...

http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/media/images/products/OSTL001/01151053_OSTL001_2_Spec2_v1_m56577569833795288.jpg <-- Smoked Salmon trimmings £1 for 120g - 88p/100g seriously cheap and tastes just as nice as normal, they obviously just have trimmings and decided to sell them off cheap in little basics packets!

Shala Moo, can I just ask.... how are you counting the weetabix? Aren't they your HEB?

Ok this is where i come across a bit odd, i have half a chocolate weetabix crushed up in yogurt and a chopped apple mixed in. It helps fill me up a bit more than just fruit and yogurt and i get a little extra fibre (and it's an excuse to have choc for breakfast :rotfl:)

    or are these....YUMMY :D

I JUST HAD MY FIRST ONE...AND I AM IN LOVE:D

Anyone tried them in the freezer?

I haven't found any in the shop yet (probably cos i havent been) but i can't wait.. think Nikkisun said that she'd had one out the freezer. Mint choc chip is probably one of my favourite icecream choices so :j

Could you make a frittata/tortilla instead of an omelette? then you could add potatoes and veg to make it more filling?

The only other thing i can think of is cous cous or rice but may be a bit messy - pasta salad?

A couple of babybel lights? You could have 4 as 2 HEAs

Take some sandwiches and use your HEBs and some syns for spread

Can you get egg & bacon & tomatoes and mushrooms at the airport at Amsterdam?

Packet of cooked turkey for the first bit of the journey (so it doesn't go off being out of the fridge)?

I have the same problem when I travel with work. I find having a green day the day before helps to fill me up then I save 4 pieces of bread as HEBs and take sandwiches to snack on (rather than mars bars and crisps!) and the babybels and cherry tomatoes.

    Good luck xoxo

The only thing I will tell you to bring MM is some warm clothes - it's baltic up here!! which direction are you headed after Glasgow?

Regarding something to snack on - ryvita to go with baby bel or dairy lea? Or ryvita minis?

I'm not sure if you'd be able to take turkey / cold meat on the flights due to Foot & Mouth risks.

I could theoretically take all of these but not sure how well they'll keep. If I plan to take them to eat in Amsterdam that means that they'll be in my bags for 9 hours! I'm not going to eat them as soon as I get on the plane at 5.30 in the morning so the soonest I'd eat them would probably be 5 or 6 hours after leaving the house! Thanks for the ideas though - very much appreciated.

I can't get babybel here unfortunately. I can certainly take plenty of cherry tomatoes and fruit and of course some sandwiches - perhaps with smoked salmon and vegetables.

I know K&F my Mum told me! My parents live on the south side of Glasgow which is where I'm going to be for most of my visit although I have to go down to London one day on business.

I'm also not sure about taking meat on the plane and I don't think it'll keep anyway so not even going to attempt that one.

I was thinking though that maybe I could take a flask of soup. Unlike the UK I can take liquid from here so maybe I'll take hard boiled eggs and cut up vegetables for breakfast on the plane and then I'll take a flask of soup and a sandwich for lunch when I arrive in Amsterdam. If I also take plenty of fruit that should see me through the snack times and by the time I get to my Mum's I'll be starving! I've already put in my dinner request for that evening :D

id be careful with meat and dairy, customs can get iffy with bringing those into the country.

if you cant get much food over, look for salads without dressing or with olive oil so you could count it as a HEB. if you get a sandwich at he airport look for ones with no mayo and something like a ham salad or cheese (HEA) on wholemeal then you can deduct 6 syns if you use a HEB for the bread on it. if you look in boots they have a meal deal so you can get a sandwich, a bag of fruit like apple and grape and a big bottle of water for about £3.

What about the half syn cake, that lasts well out of the fridge. I took some into work for my late shift the other day, and thought it was filling.

Maybe some cereal bars, such as Alpen light, or SW hi-fi light or similar ...either as HEA or as syns.

I think as far as meats go, bacon would be the best out of the fridge, maybe bacon, cold pasta and crunchy veggies salad.

*eta* Taking meat/dairy into the USA is a problem, but i've not heard that announcment within Europe.
