I don't know Aldi but I know Lidl and have bought F&V there with my Mum - it looked fine to me and their prices seemed good - although I'm talking about a year ago now. I know things are really bad in the UK economy-wise and it's disgusting that simple good-for-you things like F&V are so expensive.

Aldi is much the same MM as Lidl, every week they have 6 items that are 59p, can range from potatoes and lemons to grapes and bananas, and the rest of the fruit n veg is usually way cheaper than supermarkets. There is a fruit market about a 45 minute each way drive from me, but to be honest, I find the fruit from there goes off within a few days as I used to go there years ago but a lot was wasted. I think once I have a stock of frozen (made fresh) meals then it won't be so bad, just feels expensive just now I guess as I am making meals to freeze.

Beki what I love about SW is the fact that it does so easily fit in with all the family and I'm not making separate meals. Don't you want them to be eating leaner meat, lots more veggies, pasta with healthy sauces, etc?

My youngest isn't the biggest veggie fan but I've found that some of the things he's really loving. I'm also making a lot more soups and for instance last night I made a vegetable and chickpea soup that I served in deep bowls with couscous - granted there was more couscous than soup in the bowl but he loved it and came back for seconds.

When I make meatballs these days, I use a lot of vegetables whizzed up in the blender to pad it out so there's probably about half meat and half veg in the mixture - no-one notices any difference and it's healthier for everyone.

It does take a while to get your head around everything but once you're into it you'll realise how good it is for everyone.
I do I really do, I have tried so many times in the past for us to be healthy but it is so hard with my son having Autism, it isn't just as easy as "here is a banana", with him you have to be very careful. Some foods make him physically sick due to smell texture taste etc he has hypersensitivity to these things which can make life a nightmare! Like most children he is reluctant to try new things but he has literally not eaten for a day or two when I have tried to introduce new things which is why I am trying to keep my existing meal plan but tweak it :)
Sat down today and had a look at it and in all fairness it isn't as bad as I thought it would be, some meals just need more veg, and less bread (a huge staple in our house for meals normally) some I am going to try making myself as opposed to buying but it remains to be seen how well it will go down :)

Everything will be ok in the end, and if it isn't ok then it isn't the end :)
  • Beki I understand, really I do. My youngest has hypersensitivity so I know what you're going through. I don't know what age yours is but mine is 15 and thankfully life is a lot easier than it once was. He used to go for days without eating. He can still go all day without eating (due to meds) but then by the evening can be absolutely ravenous. Some days he'll devour bowls of soup and others he won't touch it - not even a taste so it's trial and error in everything but you know what if we sit down to a meal and he doesn't want it and simply wants a pitta with peanut butter (again!) then that's what I'll give him. I've learnt to keep pitta and other such things in the freezer so that I can just pull them out when he needs them and because they're out of my sight I don't have them.

I've also tried making mix n match suppers which work for him - I'll make a big bowl of pasta and a bowl of sauce and a couple of bowls of different veg and a bowl of grated cheese and then everyone can make their own. That works well for him as his other problem is that he doesn't like foods touching on the plate although again that's gotten a lot better as he's gotten older.

He was only 7 last November so still young and a pain in the bum ;)
He often has a problem with foods touching, used to make me laugh; beans on toast used to be beans in a bowl and toast on plate, he will now have the toast resting in bowl but if it gets too covered he won't eat it! Like your son he can like something one day and not the next, or even later in the same day as we once discovered!
With his eating habits I will have to keep some things but I will just do them in moderation :)
Nice to know someone who understands but equally someone who has made it out the other side :rotfl:

  • Out the other side huh? Just had a blow out in the kitchen....I made pasta and he told me to keep some aside and not mix it all in the sauce - what did I do, yes mixed in the sauce - he's in there now going beserk! And guess what he's done - taken a pitta out of the freezer....ho hum!

  • Just received my copy of March/April Magazine - now got to resist opening it and reading it until I fly on Saturday night!

One of the articles though (it says on the cover) is entitled Snack Yourself Slimmer - Manage your Munchies. Very topical after the discussions here over the last few days.

  • Hi all,

Just back from my class. It was very nervewracking but the people and the consultant were very friendly and put me at ease. I got a shock when I stepped on the scales though, 12st 5lbs. It was more than I thought but I guessed I'd get a shock as I couldn't do the bottom button of my coat :( The system, as another poster mentioned, has completely changed and is all done electronically which is quite novel. I also bought just about every cookbook they have so I'm looking forward to flicking through them and salivating over the recipes later!

Mediterranean Mum and Beki88: It was interesting to read your experiences with your autistic/ hypersensitive children and eating. I have always been hypersensitive, particularly to noise and smells, and have had a lot of difficulty with eating from an early age. I have often wondered if I am somewhere on the autism spectrum because I experience life and the world very intensely, but have never had this checked out. I was diagnosed with anorexia when I was 11 and several years later, became a compulsive eater so it is very difficult to find that 'middle ground' and the only thing that has allowed me to do that was Slimming World. I'm looking forward to regulating my eating habits and not eating a box of hazelnut cookies at 3am. Anyway, thank you for sharing your experiences. I applaud any parent of an autistic child. xx

Fruit is definitely more calorific and higher in sugar so I'm sure if you change from fruit to veg you'll find that you have a loss.
and vegetables don't always have to be cooked before being eaten, so a vegetable can be eaten as a snack - tomatoes, carrots, mushrooms (I love raw mushrooms), cauliflower - to name just a few. And was it you, MM, or was it Maman, mentioned having to thicken the liquid in a casserole and this needing to be synned. If you actually drain off the juices and give them a few minutes gentle boiling, either on stove or in m'wave, they will thicken naturally and you can spend your syns on wine or chocolate if you want :D

It must be so difficult .. I am spoiled as there's only me to feed. BUT: I can't have egg and tomato on the same dish. I always hated beans on toast because the toast goes all soggy. As a child I always quietly separated food on my plate so I could first eat the things I didn't like much, leaving the tastier stuff for the end (now I don't have to do that as I never feed myself stuff I don't like :D ) so I can appreciate where your kids are coming from and it's only recently I discovered it was unusual to treat food like that! And I am 64.
    :jThat's 2 stone 9 lbs gone forever:j

    thank you Slimming World!
