  • You can cook everything in a microwave, it just doesn't look good but she needs to get herself a good microwave cookery book and she will see basically there is nothing she cannot cook. Maybe you could buy her a few microwave cookery sets for boiling eggs, pans etc. Also what about a toaster oven, they are about £29 I think, might have gone up a good while since I looked, put then she could use that for oven type dishes. My oldest son was in same situation, no weight problem but only had a microwave and this was 12 years ago and he hated ready meals liked home cooked food so we bought him all the pans etc ( nowadays they don't cost anywhere near as much as they did then, I have seen things for microwave in 99p stores) for it and got a good microwave cookbook and worked out recipes of the meals he liked from this. We did buy him the toaster oven as well, but he ended up having to keep that in his room as other students were always using it and broke it so we bought him another one ( some not all students in shared accommodation will treat anyone's belongings as theirs). I know she will not be able to afford SW but there might just be one run at the University with reduced rates or if you are a member could you share your info with her so she could follow their plan. Chances are she will find either such a cookbook in reduced section of university bookshop or in university library as I remember from my own days finding all sorts of books that you would never expect to find there. Hopefully someone might have better ideas

Right back to worrying about my first WI tonight:eek:

Uni digs consist of a single bedded room, and a shared "kitchenette". That is to say, she has access to a MICROWAVE, and a FRIDGE. Thats it! Nothing else :( No cooker, no hob. She is desperately unhappy with her weight and really wants to address this now, I must admit I do worry about it. But having to live on tinned food or jacket potatoes somewhat limits us with regards to choice. Obviously she cannot cook from scratch, so can you please help with ideas to help her choose the right foods to start to be happy again? She hates baked beans, sweetcorn, peas and is allergic to all fish products. So bang goes jacket potatoes and beans, or tuna :(.

Obviously money is a REAL issue, in that she doesnt have any. :rotfl:She is living on such a tight budget that buying a fresh microwave meal each night is out of the question.

my friends halls were like that but they were catered mon-fri so they could at least get a proper meal for some of the days. my ex bf used to live off crisps and mars bars at weekend or buy sandwiches and takeaways so i understand how hard it must be for her.

can she not get cheap meals on the cafes on campus? my uni (manchester) used to do pretty good meals that were cheap and had a really good variety. if she was eating one meal out a day then it would be one meal she doesn't have to worry about.

can she get mug shots? they are cooked by just adding boiling water. not a very good "meal" but it would be something.

tinned soups can be done in the microwave if she can get those.

i used to eat the uncle bens microwave rice as a snack, if she got those and cooked one of those and maybe a jar of some form of curry sauce in the microwave that could do a meal. i'd prob keep it veggie and not add chicken though, may be issues with getting it cooked properly.

i make an asian roll called goi cuon and that just needs a kettle a fridge and copious amounts of work space. i don't add meat to mine and just use veggies. the rice noodles for the filling will cook in boiling water from a kettle as they don't need that long in hot water. theres lots of different recipes online for them. (also free on SW G or EE)

if she is really stuck, i'd possibly start to have a look at some of the raw food cookbooks. the raw food movement is starting to take off with lots of people eating raw food so she may pick up some good recipes there that don't need any cooking at all.

other than that, salads would be an obvious choice. you can get cooked cold meats and just add those with loads of veggies and low cal dressing.

Soo tired tonight. Been relying on complex lifts to work while the car has been in the garage. Now got car back, but too rushed to make first SW class. Wasn't sure I would so going to keep watching your food diaries until next week for ideas :D

    Today I have eaten:

    B. Porridge with forest fruits and 0% Total yoghurt

s: sliced cucumber, raw mangetout, a banana

L: pasta spirals with tomato and onion sauce and a banana

    D. Baked potato, quorn chilli, green salad and a shape yoghurt.

I always think it looks a lot written down. Can someone tell me if this is ok please? I have also had skimmed milk in tea.

I've brougth some of that new sweetner to try as it's syn free.

Called Truvia - made from stevia leaf. I had been using Agarve nectar on my weetabix as I don't use the sweetners like aspartame. This ones plant based but not approved yet by food standards - been massive in America and I can't see it causing problems.

I will try it on cereal as I'm sure my agarve syrup is about 2 syns per spoonful. I'll only need 1 sachet a day as I don't use sweetner in other dishes unless I'm baking which is rare as I try to avoid cakes/biscuits now, unless making them for animal rescue fundraising events.

Has anyone else tried this Truvia?
I haven't tried Truvia (well I don't actually take sugar in anything!) but I have nibbled at Stevia leaves and they are VERY sweet, isn't it about 20 times sweeter than sugar? I rescued a little plant once from a nursery and probably nibbled it to death, along with offering visitors a nibble too! I did wonder if it would be possible to soak the leaves and get sweet water to use as a sweetening agent if need be.

Hi there, sorry if this is the wrong place to post but couldnt find where else to put it!

I need help and suggestions for my daughter, returning to Uni after her christmas break. She has put an awful lot of weight on over the last couple of years, gradually but definately. We both thought that going off to uni, and having to fend for herself, would result in dramatic weight loss................h,mmmm,.Unfortunately this didnt happen, the life of a uni student seems to be one long alcohol fuelled party! DD has admitted to drinking copious pints of snakebite, resulting in some quite outstanding weight gain!!:(

Anyway, as we all know the only person who can decide to loose weight it yourself, and she has now asked for help, except we have a problem we cant seem to solve.,

Uni digs consist of a single bedded room, and a shared "kitchenette". That is to say, she has access to a MICROWAVE, and a FRIDGE. Thats it! Nothing else :( No cooker, no hob. Thanks in anticipation!!!!:T:T

see, to me, just having a microwave is a PLUS not a minus! Think, no pans to burn and scrape, it's almost impossible to burn your food, you cannot deep fry so that's a bonus too! For years I had just a Mike, I do now also have a halogen oven and a slow cooker. Perhaps your D. could have a small slow cooker for her bedsit, a small one would do a stew for 2 days for her, and she could accompany that with jacket potato from the mike. Honestly, anything excepta full roast can be cooked in the mike. There are tons of books for inspiration but the SW cookbooks can also be adapted to microwave cookery. Good luck to her, I wish her well, I'm sure she doesn't deep down want to be a chubby student.

My after-class treat used to be a tandoori mixed grill from the Indian restaurant - I never ate the naan and always ate the salad, and the meat would also do for work the next day so I don't think it was too sinful and it was a lovely treat!

Homemum - I meant to say, there's always tons of microwave cookbooks in the charity shops. I got one once (about 15 yrs ago) called French Cooking in the Microwave, so how posh is that?:rotfl:
