Vent - God damn neighbours

Options
I have been living here for a year now and like to wash my car with my son because he likes to help me. So I always save it for when I have him. I share a drive with my neighbour

Now after a year my neighbour came out and told me to wash my car on the road as the water comes by his door. Conversation went like this.

Him: "In future wash your car on the road"
Me: Why?
Him: Because of this (Points to damp part of drive by his door)
Me: Its just water I don't see the problem
Him: Its by my door
Me: I don't think its an issue

He then went in. It has really riled me up.

Venting still

He should be grateful you arent a total scum bag! Some people can be really pathetic about things can't they!

You could do something random to throw him off guard though - next time your son is with you send him to knock on his door and offer to wash his car for him. If that doesn't soften his heart I don't know what will...

Pish on his doorstep and see what he thinks of that.
  • To be honest I can see his point of view, by washing your car on the driveway you are getting his entrance way wet and therefore he will possibly be trailing water, dirt and soap suds into his house. You might not think this as a big problem, but to some people who are really house proud, it is just that.

If he has just approached you after a year, more than likely it has been something he has been putting up with. Possibly even his wife (if he's married) has finally told him to go and complain. And whilst it doesn't sound like he approached the subject in a polite manner, as neighbours you both need to consider you actions impact each other. It is far better to have a good relationship with your neighbours than a bad one.

Personally I would extend the olive branch to him. Tell him that you'll try to make sure that his side of the drive stays dry in future.

If he's house proud he'll have a mat which he can wipe his wet feet on, just the same as he would do if it had been raining outside. It's a non-issue.

In the future, TRY to avoid water going over his side, but don't worry too much if it does.

Why cant you clean your car on the road, or take it to a car wash ?
Your neighbour has been very patient, is he smaller than you ?
Many people would not stand for some numpty flooding their land outside their door, still, Birmingham innit.

Flooding? Please don't troll the thread.

It was damp by his door. Hardly flooding

Pendulum, THB, I agree with you it is a bit of a non-issue, but I was trying to see the complaint from the neighbours point of view. That might not even be the problem, maybe having to walk through the water every time is just p**sing him right off.

But, I would have thought it was much better to have a good relationship with your neighbour than not. People telling the OP to pish on his doorstep is not going to help.

It would be better to solve this "problem" now than to let it fester and grow into a bigger problem a year or so in the future, especially if they have to share a driveway.

I would understand if it left a puddle in front of his door. But it does not. It just makes the ground damp. I dont want to argue with my neighbour but I will wash my car on my drive.
