Mine is waiting to be picked up at Tesco, really tempted to go collect it! Surely they must realise they they're just going to get lots of returns at the end of the 14/28 days?

Yeah 28 days. If they don't take action they're going to be left with a lot of stock that neither customers nor HP will want so they'll end up out of pocket unless they take action.

If I were you, I would collect it ASAP and hold onto it. At least if it's in your hands they can't take it away from you.

When you do pick it up tell the guys on the Direct counter you plan to return it unless there is a price drop, it can only strengthen the case to get them to drop prices. Someone earlier in this thread was trying to encourage as much warning of mass-returns as possible to Tesco so they reconsider holding their ground on price.

I haven't even been notified yet I even got a email from them this morning

Sometimes unexpected fluctuations in supply can add time to our original availability estimate. We have learned that "HP TouchPad 9.7 inch Tablet PC (16GB, Glossy Black) - UK Version" is now back-ordered and we will update you once we have received an estimated arrival date from the vendor.

Please note that the availability and dispatch times listed on our website are estimates only, and not guarantees. While we do our best to adhere to these estimates, our inventory is constantly changing based on information we receive directly from our suppliers, and occasionally, unexpected fluctuations in supply can result in us being unable to fulfil an order. While we do not like to see this happen, and our inventory team try to avoid this at all costs, due to the size of our catalogue it is unavoidable that this will happen from time to time.

That's Amazon.com cancelling orders now as well as Amazon.co.uk - very shoddy indeed.

So why let me "purchase" an out of stock item? Bunch of incompetents.

They've really gone down in my estimation - they won't be one of my preferred online retailers any more.

    I just love those caveats.

Why don't Amazon just say "we're going to offer goods for sale that we don't have in stock and we will confirm orders that we will not honour?"
  • Thanks for all the info everyone. I thought you might like to know that I just collected my HP (full price order) from TESCO. I asked them about any refund explaining that HP were liquidating stock and had reduced the touchpad to £115 etc. The assistant got the manager down to speak to me about it, but he basically said they didn't know anything about it and they were sold out online and from old catalogue. He said they have had no communication about it and suggested contacting HP or returning item within 28days unopened. I wasn't soooo hopeful for reduced price by the time he had finished!!!??? I have the touchpad sitting in unopened box longing to be opened now!!! I think I will call HP in morning and will let you know what happens if I get through? Has anyone else heard from TESCO or HP re refund???

Exactly, it's only going to end with lots of unhappy customers who return lots of Touchpads and them losing lots of money (well, lots to me haha!) and some of their reputation. They're a market leader. It's not like they can put them all on eBay after they've all been returned! Why would Dixons Group do it but not Tescos??

Yeah, I have to admit that I'm in two minds about picking it up tomorrow - you'll have noticed as well that on the confirmation e-mail it says we've got 14 days to pick up or they'll cancel and refund. Is the 28 day thing definite? It's not that I doubt what you're saying, it's just that I also read in their T&C that they don't accept returns on computers?? From what I've seen in other threads Argos are sketchy on returns too.

I was thinking about talking to the guy on the Direct counter about refunds etc...not sure if they'd really care though? They don't seem the most motivated of workers (not that I can really blame them!!)

I agree to a point but, these are exceptional circumstances.

I had my order cancelled but, I am taking it on the chin. It's one of those things... I would really like one of these tablets but I can't have one... I can only hope I'll be lucky and snag one when they come up for sale again... and the ebay stock will then drop so there will be more avaialable at an acceptable cost.

Give it a day or two and you'll get your order in... Just be smart and alert. No point blaming Amazon... or the other retailers to be honest. Tesco is another matter however... that company just stinks... they bang on about every little helping but they are ruthless over the most random sales...

Check twitter etc for updates. I am doing this and finding it very helpful. I wish I'd done it on Monday.

I'm fuming, phoned Argos to check that my reservation for a 16GB touchpad was in store ready to collect as per the text message I was sent and was told that the store had not received the expected stock and there was nothing there for me to collect. I reserved on Sunday for collection between today and Tuesday. Back on the hunt.
  • It was the store manager that said I could return in 28days. Getting worried now! I better call them.

I had the Direct manager at my store explicitly say that there is a 28 day return policy on the unit provided it is in resellable condition. He said the only problem I may come across is the definition of resellable depends on who you talk to so for safe reason he said keep it sealed in box.
