I used to get the s**t beat out of me when my dad was !!!!ed off with my mum.

They would both come home rat-arsed from the pub, have a barney and I would get the rough end of the stick.

Funny how they could afford to get !!!!ed every night, but we never had enough food in the house.

    Me bitter? Never.

If I thought anyone I knew beat/hit their kids i think I would end up doing time.

I would never smack a child as I suffered at the hands of my mother as a child.

She would beat me with the buckle of a belt, whip me with a tree branch, throw me out of the house with no shoes on in the snow.

These memories will never leave me, therefore just telling my child that they will not be watching there favourite cartoon is sufficent enough. (For me anyway)

My mum used to do most of the smacking, I used to go out to the shed and sulk afterwards looking at the red handmarks on the top of my legs.

Dad only ever smacked me twice, once when I ran into the road and once when I broke something throwing a shoe at my sister.

We were never beaten or hit with anything other than an open palm of the hand.

No complaints about it at all, although I do think that these days there are more effective ways of dealing with discipline.

Bloom, I didn't realise that quite a lot of us got abused as children.

  • Yes, me too.

At times I was a little sod and deserved it, other times I felt hard done by.

The thing was as others have said I new where the line was drawn and knew there would be consequences if I overstepped the mark.

Nowadays its the lack of discipline by parents that is a cause of a lot of societies troubles.:A

You're not the only bitter one!

My mum makes a massive deal out of how hard she worked for us... yeah, you had drink, you had cigs, I had hand me down clothes from random people that were a) horrible b) far too short in the arms and legs for me.

Well, I do "Double Smacks" on my two boys. Unfortunately they think it's hilarious, but I get to vent my frustration on them.

Usually, they wind each other up, that winds me up, I shout "stop or double smacks", they carry on...I go in and smack them both at the same time...then they laugh and shout for more "double smacks"...I think I need to bulk up a bit..:o

yes, I got smacked as a child - yet my mum always says I was a 'good' girl! If I had done something wrong then I didnt resent the smack - but I DID resent it if I hadnt! mum wouldnt take MY word for anything - a neighbour complains about me - I had a walloping, no asking ME what happened! if my friends got into trouble I did too! mums rule was hit first ask no questions! and dad let her! discipline was NOT his forte! yet mum used to say 'wait til your father gets home'. that normally meant she would punish me again!
I was brought up in the fifties and parents were allowed - no - encouraged to discipline their kids! I was friends with a couple of twins in my class - and loved to spend time in THIER house! their parents were seen as odd - they would actually PLAY with the kids! I adored them, and from them I learned that not every child got spanked or belted! my mum thought they were beatniks! and discouraged the friendship - but by then I had learned that sometimes parents played with kids, and didnt hit them and jeez - LISTENED to what the kids had to say! I would doubt that this lady would remember me - but I tried to model my parenting on HER! she was a bit odd in her dress and ways but, she was the kindest woman and to me, the most beautiful I had ever seen. she looked very much like the actress Virginia McKenna. I was in awe of her. Her kids - my friends looked like her and were very very nice kids! I was so sorry when they moved away.

I've never seen the point. Like someone else said, the worst behaved children I've seen are the ones whose parents smack them.

If people want to smack their children, that's their choice--as long as it doesn't become outright abuse or beatings.

Personally, I will never hit a child in my care. There are many far more effective methods of disciplining children.

I'd also never reason with a small child, that's equally useless in my opinion. 'No' should mean 'no'.
