Neve got smacked by my step dad but my mum was definitely a bit slap happy, still is at the age of 90! She gave me a couple of well-deserved good hidings but nothing more harsh than that. I didn't repeat the incidents which got me those hidings, so the message obviously got through as I never got into trouble, commited crime or rioted as I grew up.

When my son was 10 he told me if I smacked him he'd go to the police. Amusingly a few weeks later I was at a business meeting also attended by our community bobby. During coffee I asked him what he'd do if one of his children (he had four girls) was really naughty, he said he'd give them a smack if it was deserved. I told him what my son had said and he laughed, said 'send him to me, we'll have a little talk'.

I did smack my children on a couple occasions - never when they were tiny - but tbh they were pretty well behaved, I put it down to keeping them occupied with interests they enjoyed and involving them as members oof thr family. I'm not an advocate of empty threats, 'if you do that again I'll smack you' and then not follow through, and not sure the soft approach is ever going to work for a wilful child. I don't know what the answer is for them although one or two of my childrens friends (brats) were lucky they didn't get taken for a long walk off a short pier when they visited!

Two things here MOTHER - I was most definitely a battered child and could have regularly featured on the NSPCC adverts :rotfl:

And I was a flaming angel :A it was those horrible older sisters that caused all the trouble!

Sorry - haven't read the whole thread (seems to be a habit of mine getting:o)

BUT, I am 31,and yes I got slapped with a hand by my mum many times - no worries - I more than likely deserved it! :p

I was FAR more scared when she brought 'The Stick' down off the top of the fridge freezer, and whacked it accross the kitchen table as a warning!

'The Stick' never touched me, nor any of my 5 siblings - it didn't have to! The 'WWWWHHAAACCCK!' on the table was a great deterrent! :o:rotfl:
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

    RIP POOCH 5/09/94 - 17/09/07

I used to get the s**t beat out of me when my dad was !!!!ed off with my mum.

They would both come home rat-arsed from the pub, have a barney and I would get the rough end of the stick.

Funny how they could afford to get !!!!ed every night, but we never had enough food in the house.

    Me bitter? Never.

If I thought anyone I knew beat/hit their kids i think I would end up doing time.

Alcohol brings out violent tendencies. I have trained my abusive parents (now in their 60s) to behave themselves through mental discipline, my brother is the same. They have realised that 2 of their children won't tolerate anything from anyone. The third is a complete doormat, and the abuse continues.

I would get hit (hand) or whacked (belt etc.) in the family home. I would wet myself @ times as so scared!!!!!

@ School I was hit with a ruler on my hand!!!

I am sure that some discipline was good to maintain order but perhaps a bit too harsh that made me frightened!!

Yes, both me and my bro got smacked by mum when we were kids, across the back of the legs. Used to leave a red mark and hurt!

We got disciplined at school too.

We were still quite naughty though!

Nowadays its the lack of discipline by parents that is a cause of a lot of societies troubles.:A

Funny how so many of us whose parents didn't resort to violence grew up to be upstanding members of society.

I don't think society's troubles are that simple.

Most posters that were smacked admitted to being naughty. That was never the case with me or my siblings, we were slapped - very hard - because my parents had (and still have) uncontrollable rages and on some occasions were just plain stupid. I do remember them commenting once having seen other people's kids in action, how disciplined we were. And yet we were still hit with adult strength for no reason whatsoever.
