I freely admit I was wrong on the German word but know just fine how a turbo and a supercharger work thank you. The end result being to compress the air (to whatever pressure) so you can get more of it into the cylinder, thus meaning you can burn more fuel for [clarkson]more powahh[/clarkson].
The tradeoff between supercharger and turbo being that the supercharger is smoother as it's constantly driven off a belt and the turbo is more efficient as it's driven by exhaust gasses. Turbo fanboys will go on about parasitic loss from the belt drive and supercharger fanboys will go on about turbo lag.0 -
Fine. But to say they are the same because ultimately do the same job was wrong and you knew what I was getting at. You could have just said the above rather than being unnecessarily sacastic. I didn't do that to you did I?
Paradigm, I'm sure Lum doesn't need your help either.
Right back on topic...

I said they were both compressors, not that they're both the same, I was attempting to explain why I incorrectly thought the German word applied to both.
FWIW, I've seen English-language car documentation refer to the turbo as the compressor throughout. Not seen any documentation on cars with superchargers though as I've never owned one. (Though at some point in my life I'd like to get my hands on a Nissan March SuperTurbo just for the comedy value)
Apologies if I came across as sarcastic, that was not my intent.0 -
OK. The OP has bought a death-blue, kid-on BMW that only a kid drifter will buy (at around £500 because otherwise his insurance would be too much) and is happy. Leave him alone to feel the normal, not kick-in-the pants, BMW vanos acceleration is sports car like, and enjoy, before he realises he has bought an expensive, not too practical, hatchback.0

Nonsense, the 325ti is a fine little car - a little aesthetically challenged, yes - but quick enough, cheap enough to run (though auto wouldn't be for me for various reasons) and I doubt it's hard on insurance as despite the grouping my 328i was fine - infact it was less than my mk3 mr2 and was a far quicker car.
Had the op bought a 318 compact or similar then I would agree, but the 325 is a decent little car - at the price he has paid it's also a bit of a bargain I'd argue, with the caveat of as long as it doesn't need much work.0 -

It was the short one liner that did it so bit of crossed wires all round.
As said above, I didn't know that you knew the differences in how it all worked, was just trying to be helpful. Because I didn't know that the statement that they are both compressors then it came over a bit strong like but the follow up has explained it fine.
Just one left to pick up the concept now!

mmmm......
I have been in contact with bmw germany and got the full spec on the car from the vin
Its a 325ti Sports SE with sport suspension, and various other sport factory adjustments.
I think the "Turbo" I experienced was actually the kickdown of the automatic acceleration having predominantly driven manuals, is not something Ive overly experienced so naively put it at that.
I wanted a 4 door 5 series but saw this and got it. As for insurance, well it went up £300 from the £350 I was already paying, I can afford that and as my insurance includes business ill be funding this mainly from my business (will be using it mainly for business) and offset tax at year end accordingly, and no, Im not a kid or a drifter and the car was a bargain so whats not to like.
Ive fixed nearly all minor niggles, detailed it and will keep for a few months (having knee surgery soon so automatic is a bonus right now) and then sell on to upgrade again. Have been offered some good resale prices already but have not seen anything else to upgrade too and want to wait for the insurance money to come in from my old car.0
