If you believe Google translation:
turbocharger = turbolader
supercharger = kompressor (which translated back to English = compressor)0 -

The concern I had was that the plate should read RX02 OGV but says RX02 0GV, didnt fancy getting pulled by some eagle eyed copper
"O" and "0" are the same character in the official number plate font ("Charles Wright 2001" font) - so the plates are perfectly correct in that respect.0 -
Ok, I stand corrected, however turbos and superchargers are both compressors surely?
Not quite. They are both forced induction but a supercharger works in a completely different way to a turbo.
A supercharger is mechanical, The engine runs it usually off a belt so you can get lots of power but it loses a little because the engine has to work to spin it up in the first place if that makes sense?
A turbo uses a turbine and exhaust gases to squash more air into the engine.
So they do the same thing but in totally different ways.

I'm sorry blue_haddock but I disagree and think that OP may well have had a very lucky escape!
I have a 2001 S Type 3.0 Sport that I bought off Ebay just over three years ago - I love driving it (quick, quiet and comfortable) but find it very expensive on fuel, especially around town which makes up a large proportion of my driving. Insurance is very reasonable (even if car tax isn't!) and there is no doubt that you get a lot of car for very little money.
However the S type does seem susceptable to front suspension problems and, for me, the warning flag on the car that whitelabel was considering was the advisory on front ball joints - mine failed the MOT on front wishbone bushes, roll bar links and ball joints last year and although the total job should have cost around £300 it ended up being a nightmare where everything went wrong and the costs just snowballed - IIRC the balljoints would not press out so the garage then tried to remove the front wheel bearings to allow better access but they were corroded in place (a common issue if you look at the jag forums). Then, trying to get the bearings out, damage was caused to the vertical links which alone cost over £300 a side to buy. By the time it was all done the total bill had risen from £300 to over £1600 - it could have been more than that but I sourced the cheapest parts online myself and, as I know the garage owner, he did me a good deal on the labour costs.
If I had known at the outset it was going to cost that much I would have just scrapped the car but once you commit to starting the work and start incurring costs it is hard to bail out.
Nevertheless, I do still love my Jag!
Good luck whitelabel - I think you had a VERY lucky escape and hope it all works out with your new car.0 -
rob, unfortunately you have been taken to the cleaners by your mate in the garage, who has used you to educate himself. Clearly he does run of the mill stuff and was overwhelmed by the jag and hadn't sussed out their little foibles before starting the job. With that lack of ability (and I'm guessing, lack of an in-house press too) he should have talked you into replacing the whole wishbones, making the job quicker and cheaper for him, but pricier in parts for you. Bushes and ball joints are always regular consumables with any jag and it is a good thing that the aftermarket got in with the individual components instead of jags horrendous complete unit replacement policy.0

Thanks for you input Colino.
I do not profess to have much knowledge about the finer details of Jag suspension but the garage does have a press and, indeed, they did change just the bushes on the wishbones rather than getting me to buy whole new wishbones. It was only when the ball joints wouldn't come out that things started to spiral out of controland I ended up forking out for vertical links.
Maybe in hindsight (a wonderful thing!) I would have been better off taking the car to a Jag specialist but the place that I did take it to is certainly not a 'run of the mill' garage - it is pretty well equipped and actually does most of its work on some quite specialist and unusual vehicles, many of which are worth £50k-£120k.0 -
Get that BM gearbox serviced, they can implode at 80k+0

That thing being to compress the air, hence both compressors.Ok. Whatever makes you feel like you know more than you actually do.

But you said.....So they do the same thing but in totally different ways.
