I managed to lob the end of the bread in the freezer before it goes hairy! I have a feeling I had to get rid of something else, but can't remember... if it was it wasn't much. Used the last spoon of curry paste the other day and threw the jar out. OP said about condiments going out of day, so going to have a look at those later.

I've been listening to the news today and it states that loads of food is being thrown away each day

At the moment i have two nearly black bananas and four wrinkled plums to use and four yoghurts that have two days before their sell by date. I need to think about what i can do with these.

Would anyone like to join me with this challenge?

Bananas are at their best when blackening; it sweetens them.

Use them mashed with some milk and stir into a healthy porridge for breakfast.

The yoghurts (hooray, someone else who spells it properly) will be fine if you chop the plums up very fine and mix. If you have any rhubarb, stew it add some honey and then drizzle with the plum yoghurt mix for a super healthy dessert.

Dont forget to add a little water and tiny squirt of tomato puree to the last of the curry jar.

Give it a good shake and you have enough for a one person mild curry flavour for mince or to stir into a gravy for shepherds pie.

I picked some more rhubarb from my allotment to make some more jam as its lovely and my lot have eaten half a jar already from the jar and a half i made last week.

I also picked some spinach as we have loads of it and its cooking nicely in my spag bog at the moment.
    .

Fabulous rhubarb, one of the unjustifiably despised wonder foods. Use it for desserts, for smoothies, mixed into vanilla ice cream. Serve with honey and grated almonds stirred into greek yoghurt. Even eat a few spoons for breakfast. Your body will thank you for it.

Spinach is essential to deter macular degeneration, particularly in older folks.

Not an old wives tale. Get some tomorrow and stir it into curries, pasta sauces and even mixed salads - it is one of the healthiest foods around.

I've done quite well this week but need to do a decent assessment of fridge and cupboards over the weekend so I don't miss anything and can plan what needs to be used this week. I need to make a noticeboard thing for the kitchen!

    Hi Everyone!

This is a great thread and I've been following it with great interest - thought it was about time i posted and stopped lurking!!!

I'm quite thrifty when it comes to shopping but I'm not a great cook so some food does tend to get wasted. I've already used some tips from here - I had some apples that were past their best so a made smashed apples, I added a bit of cinammon and raisens and it tastes lovely and I chopped up some sorry looking grapes and popped them in the freezer. I intend to add them to ice cream for DD. My oranges would normally go in the bin but I'm going to slice them and freeze them to. Also used up leftover beef from Sundays roast in a beef hotpot ( would normally have just give it the dogs) I had some cheese that had started to go hard so I made cheese biscuits.

Blimey, I didn't realise how much I would have wasted!

I need some inspiration with a bag of onoins though, I've been adding them to everything I can but I've still got loads! Thought about making a tomato and onoin salsa type thing to go with salad but don't really know what else to put in it?

    Thanks for a great thread:T :T :T

Is there anyway of labeling freezer stuff without spending loads on labels. I've tried some sticky ones from work but they just fall off.

Hi p00, I normally use a bit of paper and cellotape! Not very technical but it works ok!

I often freeze in margarine tubs and write on them with one of those pens for writing on comp discs.

Half pound marg tub holds enough for a jacket potato filling, left over gravy etc. 2lb marg tub holds plenty of casserole. 1lb marg tub will take servings of mashed potato or a couple of portions of cooked vegetables. AND they stack quite well in the freezer :D.
