Mr B E - I took my own advise and had a pasta dish last night with some fried up tomatoes, we are given a load and I used tiny ones as only took 5 mins to mash down, added a dried chilli, some herbs, 1/2 a left over pepper and a good squeeze of reggae relish that I'd forgotten about until answering your question yesterday - lovely and quick only took the 12 mins the pasta needs start to finish.

Frugalista - how can you not want curry! :D
    chicken mayo for sandwiches.
pasta, bits of chicken, toms & herbs (bit like described above)
savoury rice with bits of chicken added
or any sauce you like with bits of chicken so that they soak back a bit of moisture.

Ive just reslised I have 4 eggs in the fridge with todays date on. AAhh. How can I tell if they are still ok to eat? and if they are ok what can I do with them?
I also have 1/2 joint of cooked roast pork in the fridge that needs eating so any ideas for them together would be great.
I have all the usual store cupbaord ingredients, just no inspiration, thank you
    Happy days
  • Something to do with putting eggs in a bowl of water if they sink/float tells you if they are okay. Will just go and check net to see which is which for you lol

    Edited to add
The old standbys are to fill a container with cold water and carefully drop the egg into the water. If it lays on its side or the wide end; it's supposed to be fresh. If it rests more on the pointy end; it's supposed to be an older egg.

You can also crack the egg. If the white is thicker and stays mounded/clingy to the yolk; it's fresher. If it runs thin and spreads otu faster; it's older. If you buy eggs on sale, you can always crack them and freeze them if needed.

But you said they had todays date on? So they should still be ok to eat? I wouldn't have even tested as would have been so sure that todays date were perfectly acceptable/safe to eat :o

Oh no! This is the Fresh Egg Test Just because they are older doesn't mean that they have gone bad and aren't safe to eat.

Personally after doing the test, I crack the eggs one at a time into a dish before adding to what I'm making, and if an egg is off you will be left in no doubt because of the smell. _pale_ I would use them for baking.

This thread discusses using eggs beyond their date:

Dates on eggs / how long do they keep for?

And this thread has lots of ideas for using them:

    Eggs eggs and more eggs!

  • Yay, I'm glad you got the eggs back! They normally keep for a long time after their date - as long as they sink in a bowl of water they're good!
:D Skint but happy with my lovely family :D
