Great programme - better get started digging out a plot. It will have to be out front which is south facing as our back garden is both shady and used by the dogs - don't fancy them having access to the veggie plot! Actually think it would be great use of a fairly large, partly tiered space which at the moment is a nightmare to try to mow! But I'd like to try to make it relatively ornamental as well. Those jerusalem artichokes look like a good start - sunflower looking plants should be pretty. Anyone have any other suggestions - veg (or easy fruit) that look nice as well as being tasty and ideally easy to grow? (Don't want much do I? :rotfl:)
ps you're right - a gardening board would be GREAT!0 -
Great programme, lots of info.
With regards to a gardening board there is already "THE POTTING SHED" on here. Some pics of other posters veg plots on there too , if I remember correctly. I'll see if I can find it.
Here it is ...

really enjoyed this programme...just what I need to get me motivated again. my crop of spuds was very disappointing last year, I don't think I watered them enough.
I've never seen anyone get so excited about harvesting potatoes as Carol! I thought her husband was coming out to dispense her medication.weaving through the chaos...0 -
Also putting a hands-up for a gardening board.
I've just taken on an allotment and would love any advice I can get.0 -

Many of the salad veg are quite ornamental - lettuces, rocket, chicory. Ruby chard is very pretty - tastes a bit like spinach (and there's an even more colourful mix called Bright Lights now). Ornamental cabbages are edible, although the flavour isn't great, but there are several types of cabbage that look nice as well as being quite flavoursome. Most herbs are pretty and delicious as well. Some flowers are edible and good in salads. If you like artichokes, the artichoke thistle (cardoon) is a very imposing plant and the roots are edible.
There's some good information on edible plants here: http://www.pfaf.org/leaflets/ediborn.php0 -
Well I've just got home from signing up for my allotment! I'm so excited! :j :j I felt a bit silly approaching the group of 60+ year old men (I'm 25 and female!) to find out how I could get one but they were all so lovely and helpful!
Just wish it would stop raining so I could go and get started, am feeling very motivated!
Need to check all these links and sites out now for tips and advice!

PS - Totally agree with the comment about how scarily excited she was about those potatoes! :rotfl:Wandered away from the MSE track for a while but am back and on a mission! Debts cleared nearly £18k. Now to start saving ...0 -
An inspiring programme, I'm all fired up with enthusiasm.
I can confirm that Jerusalem artichokes are easy peasy to grow. They are available in farm shops now. Just buy a few and plant them (buy some to eat too;) ) I've found them to be quite expensive in farm shops so well worth growing your own.
Anyone else find the music on the programme really annoying ?0 -
Thriftlady I didn't notice the music but thought some of the camera angles were a bit annoying - I wanted to see the plot and the plants, not really the people!Wandered away from the MSE track for a while but am back and on a mission! Debts cleared nearly £18k. Now to start saving ...0

Yes, good programme.
Yes, am now re-motivated (grew veg last year but can't remember being quite so excited about the results).
Yes, let's have a Gardening thread so we can all help each other.
And yes, Carol Klein seems to have inadvertantly discovered how to help people who are feeling a bit low -go dig some spuds!!!!!!:rotfl:0
