Got a very small area at the bottom of the garden, where nothing ever grows, approx 2m . 1.5m.

How do i prepare the ground and when?
What do I do about cats messing in the dirt, as we have a lot around us?

Any other tips for a 'first timer' as I am clueless?
with ref to cats, we had one in the vicinity who frequently chose to leave its little messages in the same area of soil - I heard somewhere that cats dont like the smell of citrus so I started to scatter any leftover orange & lemon skins on the plot. It doesnt look that pretty but I havent seen any cat whoopsie since so it might be worth a try?
  • We have a south facing garden so most of it is sunny just the area at the end of the garden which is normally shady. Not sure of soil type. Thanks for the tips for cats, will try that all over the garden as they are a real pest near to me.
    now mum of 4!!!

I grew rocket, lambs lettuce spinach, mint, thyme, indoors.

Just took a plastic tray you get mushrooms or meat in from supermarket, bit of compost and it grew liike wildfire

Lettuce is the best as its so expensive to buy for what it is given its been shipped from the other side of the planet!

Careful though, the rocket is super peppery!

I got my seeds from wilkinsons in london- stratford E15.

    Hi Lynzpower

Do you need to poke holes in the bottom of the tray for drainage? And can the veggies you mentioned be grown all year round?

    Thanks

I saw this too and was very excited as we're buying a house with a 50' garden and it's own attatched 50' allotment! we've been in a 20' garden which is almost completely shaded for the last three years so this is a very big deal to me. We're already planning to grow potatoes in a dustbin and tomatoes etc in pots as they were about the only things we had any luck with where we are, but I must admit we've now decided to grow Jerusalem Artichokes - I always thought they were too pricey but I hadn't realised they stay there forever - a one off payment is fine! (and they look fun too).
I'm not a big fan of Carol Klein (but then I fancy the pants off Monty Don so I'm baised!) but I did enjoy her potato related excitement! :D

Is it possible to alter things so that you can grow some veggies in the sunny area?
Where are you in the UK, I'm not being nosy, its just that it makes a difference regarding frosts etc.
