I'm hoping to grow my own salad stuff this year as i've just moved and actually have a garden with a bit of room to spare! How tricky is it to grow lettuce/cucumbers/peppers - should I be sticking to something easy like cress for my first attempt?!
I must spend about £5+ a week on salad stuff in the summer so i'd love to save some money here and have the satisfaction of eating something I had grown.0 -
Is this the right place to start a "We want a gardening board" campaign?! (tried it on the Christmas board and got told that the lawnmower sounds were drowning out the jingle bells!:D )0

Salad leaves are really easy - well they must be because i've got loads and i've never grown anything fancier than mould before. i started two square foot gardens in september with three squares of mixed leaves. they are still growing now. I also had some lovely lettuces, radishes and chinese leaves. dd has her own plot too and it has encouraged her to eat more greens - go for it and good luckI'm going to feed our children non-organic food and with the money saved take them to the zoo - half man half biscuit 20080

seconded - it would save us spending out on "essential" gadgets and also maybe seed swaps as they always put too many in the packetsI'm going to feed our children non-organic food and with the money saved take them to the zoo - half man half biscuit 20080 -
thanks for this. i gonna watch this now. hubby has just been called out on work so i can watch this and hopefully take in lots of knowledge.
i am going to try again this year with veggies. but i do have a big advantage. my dad (60 next month) is a professional gardener by trade after so many years he has a mass of knowledge on all this under his belt. and also he has a green house that i can use if needed. although my parents grow so much there isn't much space left.
prog's like this always get me so inpsired.0 -
I'm going all 'good life' now thinking about growing some salad and veggies! Can anyone recommend any good books/websites for absolute beginners? I would definately encourage a gardening board, it would be great for newbies like myself looking for advice and ideas.0

Ooo Dan, I love you! I was just about to sulk because it isn't on - and there you are saving the day.... Unless of course you are a dentist in which case I'm scarpering as my mothers fear of dentists has passed on to me - strangely I only developed the 'phobia' as an adult! Ooops, sorry, off topic again...:oDan29 wrote:Wednesday night if you can only get BBC Wales.
