• well done juliejim! Been offline for a while as I've been out of the office doing store visits. This is usually a bad time of the month for me as I spend all day in the supermarkets and end up buying all kinds of crap. I didn't do too badly this time - one incidence of falling off the wagon which I'm making up for by having no syns for the rest of the week. Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind - if I'd planned it i wouldn't be in this position now! Think I've learned my lesson as I ended up making a vat of proper roast potatoes with goose fat for OH and a guest and couldn't have any of them!

Consultant is dead right on the sticky toffee mullerlite, it will blow your head off. The lemon cheesecake one is also lush. I had jelly with vanilla mullerlite after tea last night and pretended I was at a birthday party, it was yummy!

btw, thanks to Consultants list i've found a great HEB - Weetabix Crunchy Bran. You get a massive bowlful for your 42g as they weigh hardly anything and they've got loads more taste than the dreaded allbran.

finally sorry to hear about the dog allergy - have you considered getting a poodle? They don't shed and people with allergies are often fine with them. Plus as long as you don't give then stupid haircuts they're really cute and very trainable.

Finally, Katiep you make me feel exhausted just reading your post! A loss is still a loss, and remember muscle weighs more than fat so you may have lost more than you think!

I know! I've just always done so well when I've exercised before - never a loss of less than 3lb!

Oh well, it's made me really determined this week. I've had breakfast and lunch so far today, and so far, all free foods! About to have some ryvita for a HEB with some HEA laughing cow. The only challenge this week will be a day in London on Saturday. My plan for the moment is to try to stick to salads.

Hello all

WOW - i didn't know this thread existed. Every time i log on - i just concentrate on the 'money matters' and nothing more...

Anyways - i have a success story to share.

Back in May 2006 - i got diagnosed as a diabetic. I weighed 16 stones 2 LBS, with a 40 inch waist. I was still happy and carried on life as normal. One day i went to Matalan to buy some pants and tried on my normal size of 40 - and guess what? - they didn't fit. So i bought the next size up of 42.

On my way home i started thinking about stuff and said to myself this has got to stop. I cant change my clothes size everytime i put on wieght. SO I DECIDED TO LOOSE WEIGHT.

So where do i start???? To cut a long story short, i joined the gym and changed my eating habit.

I had a banana/semi milk smoothy for breaky, a light salad for lunch and light supper (salad, chicken, fish etc all boiled). This was soooooo difficult i tell you. I suffered and suffered as i was use to eating so much more. I also adopted a policy of not eating ANYTHING after 8 - 'after eight is too late'

Re: the gym - i started going everyday, again found it very difficult as i have a young family and a demanding job. But i made time - straight after work and early mornings on the weekends. I did a lot of cardio followed by some light weight training.

End result - weighed in yesterday......

10 stones 12 LBS and a 32/33 inch waist.

It was very very difficult and prob the hardest thing i've had to do but it paid off. I now only go to the gym between 3 - 4 times and have shorter sessions (run about 3 miles and then some weights) and am done in an hour.

My eating habit has changed too. I can eat a salad trwice a day and not feel hungry. And my diabetes is controlled by diet and exercise alone meaning no more pills.

The only issue i have is how to tone up. As i've lost all this weight parts of my belly is very floppy and am finding it difficult to tone up - but i guess it'll take time.

All the best everyone and remember it CAN be done.

Note to self: Must not eat chocolate mini rolls in work until I have found out syns value ... they are 8 1/2 syns  Oh well, lesson learnt and syns for today accounted for. Have a smash pizza in the oven again as am rushing out - tonight is the first night of my sugarcraft class.

Went out for lunch with work yesterday and chose carefully - I was able to use HE's and syn some and had no other syns all day. To counteract the damage I set to drink loads of water yday afternoon and last night. I drank 3 jugs full of sugarfreejuice (not in one go!!)- thinking the jug held 1 litre. Many trips to the loo later I decided to check the volume of the jug - turns out it holds 2 litres so I drank 6 litres of water  Spent half the bloody night wee-ing and am shattered today :rotfl:

So by doing Slimfast for three weeks I will hopefully slim down a bit, and then after my stomach will have shrunk so I won't be as hungry. Plus for me, my new job will be active, not the sedentary seat warming I'm currently engaged in, and with my gym work I'll develop muscles to lose lbs while I rest - perfect! ;)

Just a small word of warning... when I did slimfast (several years ago), I found that if I had a very busy, active day I would feel faint and I found I needed to add in soup and a dry wholemeal roll at lunch on top of the slimfast shakes. For me it was such a dramatic change not to have lunch and just have a shake/hot chocolate for lunch that my body took a while to cope with it.

Just wanted to warn you as you are planning extra activity, a new job, the gym and change to slimfast!!

I expect it may just be me and as I said, it was several years ago I last tried slimfast so things have probably changed LOTS with their recipes!! ;)

As for portion sizes I found the best way was to dish up what I normally would for OH and then dish mine up to be very slightly less. Then when I got used to that, I dish up slightly less again for me. (Leftovers become my lunch or get frozen for another day).

Now I dish up roughly the same for me as I do for the kids (11 and 8 year olds) - unless I've had an especially hungry kind of day :D

Thanks newlywed very fair comment, and something I was concerned about when I saw the amount of calories in a day. However I always make sure I have a snack before and eat a meal straight after the gym - don't care if it counteracts the benefits slightly, still better to go and eat a bit more! Saying that, today has been amazing - had a smoothie for lunch, starved til lunch but then didn't get around to eat until 2:40 so can't have been that hungry! Had a horrible self made shake for lunch (think I measured wrong) then a bite of a meal bar for an afternoon snack as I had only about 80% of the shake... Thought would scoff the meal bar, but for the first time in my life have resisted! Incredibly filling, so looking forward to eating the rest of it for a meal tomorrow. Extraordinary to think that I've only consumed 4-500 cals today (usu 800-1000 by now) and I'm not that hungry, whereas at this time I would ordinarily be feeling faint and like my body was eating itself out of starvation!!! :rotfl:

Honey how on earth did you manage to drink that amount???? ! I really struggle getting in a litre... didn't you notice that you were running low on juice :rotfl: If you haven't already, make sure you eat lots of salty food to get you feeling tip top ;)

Yus thank you so much for that very inspirational post - sounds like you have an iron will! After you'd lost a few stones was it harder to keep going (ie was there a bit of resting on your laurels tendency)?

It was very difficult at first especiialy seeing people eating all round you and the food you love the most. People in my office tend to be very generous on a Friday and someone will definately bring a huge bar of chocolate or some cakes or biscuits. Before my diet - i used to help finish this off. I cannot tell you how difficult it was to resist but then you get used to it.

It's like anything really - difficult to start with and takes time getting used to but if you know your goals and objectives - YOU WILL GET THERE.

I never thought i would be where i am today. Looking back to last May when i was 16 stones i would not have have imagined that in 9 months time i would be just under 11 stones.

I knew my goal and NEVER fell off the wagon.

Well done Juliejim, what a great week's loss!

KatiePC I'll get some of theCrunchy Bran on your recommendation. I only use AllBran to make the cake, it's surprisingly nice!

Yus welcome and thank you for your post. Diet and exercise is by far the best way to deal with diabetes and to give you the energy to enjoy your young family to the full, well done!

Newlywed, when I was calorie counting (years ago) someone tipped me off to using a smaller plate but still filling it - it's quite a good way to fool your brain into thinking you're still eating lots, while actually cutting the cals.

I have a very, very sweet tooth (actually a mouthful of sweet teeth :D ) which I sometimes find difficult to satisfy. As I said before, the STP Mullers are great, but I've also found that dates do the trick too. They are 2 syns each but it only takes a couple and they keep my cravings at bay for the rest of the day.

Catmeister I do worry about very low calorie diets (VLCDs) and found this on a website which may be interesting to you:-
Changes that take place within your body while you are on a VLCD include:

• Slow down of BMR - Your metabolism slows to conserve energy because the body thinks it is starving.
• Breakdown of protein as a source of energy - To get needed carbohydrate, the body breaks down protein. This causes a loss of lean body mass such as organ and muscle tissue. It is important to preserve lean tissue, since it increases your basal metabolic rate. Losing too much lean tissue increases the percentage of fat in your body. The result is a reduced metabolism. This is one reason why it is so easy to regain weight when you lose weight quickly.
• Fat loss - In a VLCD (or during starvation), about half the weight you lose is fat and the other half is lean tissue, such as muscle. On a more moderate diet, the loss is about 75% fat and 25% lean tissue.
• Electrolyte and water loss - Electrolytes are minerals found naturally in the body, such as potassium, calcium, sodium, and magnesium. Electrolytes are needed to keep the body's balance of fluids at the proper level and to maintain normal functions, such as heart rhythm, muscle contraction, and brain function. Mineral and electrolyte imbalances can occur while on a VLCD. These imbalances can be life-threatening. This is the reason these VLCDs must only be used under a health professional's supervision.
• Calcium Depletion - Bone mass is lost. This is more risky for women, because they diet more often than men and they are also at higher risk for developing osteoporosis.

I let my mind wander and it never came back!
