  • Hello all
well done on all the weight losses
i haven't been here in a few weeks, i managed no weight gain at christmas or new year but then had a trip to London and put on 2lb, but it was worth it, i've lost that now and have a posh meal for which i have to wear a little black dress on Sat 27th so on Monday i set myself a 12 day challenge to lose half a stone before the do. Going ok so far 2lb+ gone, but socialising and having meals is so hard when your on a diet.
    fingers crossed anyway

I have the same reply for both Kay and Loopy - try not to think of this as a diet. Because you go 'on' a diet, it's pre-supposed that it's only for a while then you'll come 'off' it. To make a long-term plan to be slim you really have to make changes to the way you eat and drink for ever.

It can make it difficult to socialise and eat out, but only because you haven't made the committment to find a way round the problem and there is always a way if you want to find it.

When you go out drinking, I'm presuming you know that alcohol has too many syns/calories/points to indulge freely! The answer is to change your habit of drinking beer, lager or alcopops and have shorts with a diet mixer. Vodka and diet coke for example has far less syns (around 2½) than a pint of lager (up to 10). In between each short have a diet coke (or whatever they have in diet drinks) and over the evening you will have consumed about a quarter of the syns/calories you normally would, without spoiling your enjoyment of a night out with your family or friends. Apart from the benefit to your weight, this will also benefit your general health and well-being.

The same applies with eating out. Often it's acceptable to ring the restaraunt in advance and ask for a copy of the menu so you can work out what you can have in advance. Alternatively it's almost always possible to pick something from a menu which won't be an absolute diet killer. You can ask for dressings to be served separately, jacket potato instead of chips etc. If there's a melon starter, I often ask for it as my pud, they never raise an eyebrow, and I know it's lower than gateau or profiteroles, but I'm still getting a pud just like everyone else.

It has to be a lifestyle change and you have to want it with all your heart. You need to commit yourself to whichever plan you follow 100% unless you want to be a serial dieter!

I have a daughter who has just been diagnosed with PCOS which is hindering her plans to have a baby and the doc won't treat her until she loses weight. Unfortunately PCOS seems to make it very difficult to lose weight too and she gets very disheartened. She told me last week that every time she wants a bar of chocolate she asks herself "do I want this more than I want a baby" and of course the answer is "no"! It's helping her stay focussed on losing the weight and a similar technique can work for all of us if we try hard enough.

Sorry to drone on, but I hope some of it helps :)
I let my mind wander and it never came back!

Morning, very wise words Cosultant, you need to change your whole lifestyle not just while you are on a diet. For me that has been stop buying ready meal and even things like ready made sauses etc. It cannot be good for you with all that salt and preservative and it is cheaper to cook yourself.
My stew last night was not a 100% success as the potatoes were hard again. I did as you said cut them really small but after 7 hours they were still not as I would have liked them. Well still learning.
Had 1 1/2 glass of red wine really stupid so that is now 10 1/2 glass for a week not great when my limit was 7. However it has made me think about what I drink and I feel guilty if I drink more. Edimew and Lois are you up for it this week.

    Hi everyone,
Watched Paul Mckenna show last night, can see he has got some valid points but I think I would feel a bit silly taping my face to stop me wanting to eat something.
I agree with the OP that do not consider this as a diet because I have become a bit disheartened with the thought of eating lettuce for the rest of my life!!
What I have done that has helped me the very most is not buy anything that could be tempting, the fridge is full of a ready made salad with peppers, fromage frais, cottage cheese, the bread is nimble or WW , not bought any crisps, etc etc so that if it gets bad and I can stand it no longer when I go in the kitchen there is nothing there that I can be tempted with!!!
I also put my own sign of encouragement above the cooker in the kitchen so when I go in there I can read it and see that I have lost weight and this is why I am doing it!!
Also I got a pair of trousers one size too small that I had at the back of the cupboard and tried them on, obviously they do not fit...but they will!!
I hope everyone has a great day, we will all get there in the end, can't wait to monday for my weigh in as I think despite it being hard sometimes I have done o.k xxx

Consultant - I don't know how you cope with that disturbed sleep. I would feel shattered. I don't sleep for many hours, but when I'm out, I'm out. I get some weird and wonderful dreams:D

I faltered too this week as I decided to study another course. When the books arrived, I reached for the sweets. Then my daughter arrived (I haven't seen her since Christmas as she works away) and asked me if I had lost some more weight, as I looked slimmer. I remembered that I had lost 6lb since Christmas and would be a fool to undo that. Then the thought popped into my head that told me that I am now at the weight I was just before I gave birth to her! So I pushed that thought out of my head.:D I must look slimmer if my daughter was giving compliments as she tells it as she sees it. She once told me that I looked like Princess Dianna ..........before she had her nose job.

Keep going everyone, you are are going to get there. I am not going to go back to the gym this month as January always seems to be very busy, so I will step up the speed I walk at. Walking fast doesn't really get me out of breath, so am going to do 'Scouts pace' (20 paces at the run, then 20 paces at a fast walk, then 20 paces at the run, and so on).

For those that get PMT, I found that taking Evening Primrose Oil helped me. I use to get very weepy at certain times of the month, now I don't. Not saying that it will work for others, but it worked for me:D

RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.
Read the sticky on the House Buying, Renting & Selling board.

  • MissMP I wish I looked like Princess Di, even before the nose job, lol. What are you studying for? I do admire anybody who goes back to studying after their children have flown the nest. The only thing I wanted to learn was how to use a computer. I did the ECDL course, found this site and never went any further 'cos I spend so much time here, I don't feel the need to go any further. Like Honey, I too am an addict :rotfl:

Victory and Tallgirl you have made some very positive changes by not buying the foods that tempt you too much. It's a good start, and with a positive mental attitude (PMA) you can do anything you want to do.

Keep it going ladies (and Suggs) we can do this, we will do this.
I let my mind wander and it never came back!

The important thing is it's making you think and keep a record which is no bad thing. You maybe already doing this but have you tried substituting a spritzer for a couple of glasses. Or maybe a nice long G&T. Not as good for your liver but better for the waistline. Look at me with all my advice. shame I can't follow it :o
Congrats to Lois for being this weeks winner by the way.

As for this week, well I'm off on holiday on wednesday so I'll set the mini challenge of 5 pints up until then. So that'll be 2.5 Sat and 2.5 Sun. Shouldn't be too difficult. I'll also try and be a bit more concious about my drinking when I'm away. Can't say fairer than that.

Giggling for just 15 minutes a day burns enough calories to shed up to 5lbs of fat over a year, work shows.
A big belly laugh uses about the same energy as walking more than half a mile, the US study in the International Journal of Obesity suggests. Laughing makes the heart beat faster and works many different muscles. More if you click the link.
