Hi - does anyone know how I can get split tickets from London to Sheffield for this weekend? The cheapest I can find for a departure from London on Sat am and returning Sun pm is £47.50 on trainline.com (including fee and insurance).
Can anyone help me on this?0 -
Have you given Megatrain a try? They do very cheap single tickets with East Midlands Trains, starting at £1 plus £1.50 booking fee.0

You can at least save the fee by booking on another site. The insurance is not compulsory either.
For split tickets, try the major intermediate stations - Derby, Leicester. It may or more likely may not be cheaper.0 -
I'm about to make a huge effort to discover split tickets or special offers London - Edinburgh and back 2 weeks later, but has anyone already done this? It would be very helpful to be given a clue or two.
We are travelling late July, with some flexibility in the exact dates, and senior rail cards.0 -
If you have to travel peak between Taunton and London, you save a mint if you split your ticket at Pewsey. I had been doing this for eight weeks last year when a ticket inspector objected and tried to charge me full fare. I insisted this was legal and above board - the train stopped at Pewsey, so no problem there - but he called for the Fraud Team, all three of whom stood over me in an intimidating manner. They told me I would have to get off the train at Pewsey and buy a ticket to continue with that journey, if I wanted to use that option: ie I couldn't buy split tickets in advance. They threatened to call the Transport Police to meet me at Paddington so I caved in and bought a full ticket, even though I knew they were talking rubbish. They handed me a book of rules and nowhere within its pages does it say that what I was doing was illegal, yet I was branded a fare dodger in front of everyone.
But, anyway, before this happened my split return came to the fantastic sum of £48! Well worth knowing.0 -
I want to go from London to York on Saturday 5 July and return Monday 7 July. The East Midlands routes are all first come, first served, and as I'm a pensioner and unable to move quickly I can't run! But I do need a seat. Does anyone know if there are cheaper than £49.50 seats (for return journey) with reserved seat? I've looked at the websites, but can't quite work them out. Many thanks.0

For a walk-on fare with a SE network railcard, found the best split was at Milton Keynes (to get the 1/3 off) and buy a separate ticket for Milton Keynes to Birmingham Exhibition Centre.
Do check the train you are travelling back on stops at Milton Keynes though as some of them don't.0 -

If you buy advance purchase singles then it is unlikely that split ticketing will save you any more.
If you buy savers (which incidentally you don't need to buy in advance, they are the same price on the day) - well maybe. Why not try looking at the major points en route (Birmingham Derby and Sheffield for example) and see what it works out at.0 -

Why are you looking at East Midlands routes? National Express East Coast are the main operator between London and York and offer good priced advance singles each way (with reservations). The rail websites seem to be playing up at the moment so I can't check what's there.0
