To go from Manchester to London direct at the moment is £62 so with this being £20 cheaper (each), I am tempted to book the £40 tickets.
Can anyone give me a steer as to what I should do? Help!
I assume you are travelling both ways at a weekend - in which case what will happen is anyone's guess. When it comes to it there may well be no Virgin trains even if they are showing as direct now. If this is the case I'd go for the Sheffield route.
If one direction is in the week get a single direct for that (assuming it's cheaper or you are happy to pay extra for the speed) and another via Sheffield for the other leg.
The fares via Sheffield will not get cheaper. The direct ones MAY - OTH it's just as likely there will be no direct trains when you want to travel.0 -

Hi yes travelling at the weekend. Just went to book and there is an alert on the cheap journey that says
"It has not yet been confirmed that First Transpennine Express services are showing correctly between Saturday 26 July and Friday 1 August. Please check again nearer the journey time"
What does that mean? I went to try to book and it took me to East Midlands Trains, they said the tickets are not available and then I had to input the journey again and its comes up as significantly more expensive. Could it be because one of the journeys was 1st class (that ticket on the outbound journey was cheaper). I can't believe how complicated this gets and I feel totally confused. Thanks for your help I really appreciate it.0 -
I'm trying to work out the cheapest way to get from Bedford to Manchester and back....at anytime, although most recently on July 2nd/3rd. So far it seems to be cheaper going from Milton Keynes instead, but Bedford would be handier.
Any suggestions?
Thanks0 -
Advance purchase singles via Sheffield or that way (Nottingham) look cheap enough (£8 upwards). If you can get them they will beat any split ticketing.
I'm surprised it's cheaper via Milton Keynes though. I'd suggest if you did go that way it would be better to buy the bus separately (pay as you board) and look for advance singles from MK. Or maybe you are doing that anyway0 -
Hi, I'm wanting to go 1 adult 1 child with family railcard return to ashford international from arnside. 21st July needing to make the 16.55 eurostar from ashford, returning 24th july, getting into ashford at 10.06 off the eurostar. I've had a look and I can't seem to get it any cheaper than about £70, tried splitting at Preston or London but no success. The times with the eurostar aren't flexible as I've already booked that. Anyone any ideas?
Thanks very much.0 -
Instead of booking Birmingham International to Basingstoke Std Return at £85.00. Split the journey at Banbury and save £50.20. No changes are involved as it is a straight though journey.
I've been doing this for years but this week the guard was inspecting my tickets as we pulled into Banbury and he made me get of the train and catch the one behind! Can they do this? You say in the lead article that split journeys are OK as far as the ATOC are concerned. Is there some press release or something that I can refer the guard too the next time this happens.

No they can't - he went way beyond his powers.
Sorry can't provide a reference though0 -

Sorry, no - it looks as though what you have found is as good as you'll get. There might be a small saving on the Virgin site if you are not already using that.
Booking from Ashford rather than St Pancras may have been a mistake, unfortunately. Unless you saved a packet you are going to lose that saving on the extra cost in getting to Ashford0 -
Thanks dzug, that's what I was starting to think. Well there was a buy one get one free deal on the eurostar which would only work from ashford so I probably will have saved overall. Thanks again.0

From Westbury to Carmarthen I was quoted £35 (+/- a £1) on the train website - eeek.
Instead buy westbury to cardiff advance ticket at £5 and cardiff to carmarthen open ticket for £13.
Saving about 50%.
I thought the new system was supposed to make tickets simpler!0
