Hi yes travelling at the weekend. Just went to book and there is an alert on the cheap journey that says

"It has not yet been confirmed that First Transpennine Express services are showing correctly between Saturday 26 July and Friday 1 August. Please check again nearer the journey time"

What does that mean? I went to try to book and it took me to East Midlands Trains, they said the tickets are not available and then I had to input the journey again and its comes up as significantly more expensive. Could it be because one of the journeys was 1st class (that ticket on the outbound journey was cheaper). I can't believe how complicated this gets and I feel totally confused. Thanks for your help I really appreciate it.

Hi, Sorry to be a pain but can anyone help wih this? Thanks.

I really really want to go and see the Klimt exhibition in Liverpool but travel is over £100!

Does anybody have a sensible option please? ;o)

Don't know where & when you are looking but I easily found fares of £26 return booking a few weeks in advance.

You could book London to Manchester using this offer and buy a separate ticket from there. Don't know if it's cheaper overall

A saver return that you can buy on the day is only £62.60 so I really can't see where you get 'over £100' from. 0917 and later trains out, any train return - no need to book.

As Alan says, advance singles can reduce this to (potentially) £13 each way. You don't always have to book THAT far in advance - next Wednesday for exapmle £21 out £13 back is currently available.
  • Crewe to Sheffield, normal price (Via Stockport) = £28 return.
Splitting the journey and buying a ticket from Crewe to Derby, then Derby to Sheffield will save you around £12 (and only adds about 15 mins to the journey time)

Instead of booking Birmingham International to Basingstoke Std Return at £85.00. Split the journey at Banbury and save £50.20. No changes are involved as it is a straight though journey.

I've been doing this for years but this week the guard was inspecting my tickets as we pulled into Banbury and he made me get of the train and catch the one behind! Can they do this? You say in the lead article that split journeys are OK as far as the ATOC are concerned. Is there some press release or something that I can refer the guard too the next time this happens.

    Phil

Well I've found a reference to para 19 which I'll cut and paste below - not sure what document it's part of though.

    19. Using a combination of tickets
You may use two or more tickets for one journey as long as together
they cover the entire journey and one of the following applies:
    (a) they are both Zonal Tickets (unless special conditions prohibit
    their use);
    (b) the train you are in calls at the station where you change from
    one ticket to another; or
    (c) one of the tickets is a Season Ticket (which for this purpose does
not include Season Tickets or travel passes issued on behalf of a
passenger transport executive or local authority) or a leisure travel
pass, and the other ticket(s) is/are not.
You must comply with any restriction shown on the tickets relating to
travel in the trains of a particular Train Company or Train Companies
    (see Condition 10).
If you do not comply with this Condition, you will be treated as
having joined the train without a ticket and the relevant parts of
Condition 2 or 4 will apply, either to the entire journey, or from the
last station where the train stopped at which at least one of the
    tickets was valid.
For the purposes of this Condition, a “leisure travel pass” means any
multi-journey ticket (excluding Season Tickets) valid for:
    (i) at least 7 consecutive days; or
(ii) at least 3 days in a period of at least 7 consecutive days
and includes rover tickets, travel passes, flexipass tickets and
    BritRail passes."
  • hey, im trying to find a reasonable one-way fare for this friday evening from london to manchester I can't find anything cheaper than £45. Any tips on finding split tickets for this route anyone? Any help much appreciated.
  • For a single journey from Huddersfield (or Slaithwaite via Huddersfield) to Manchester Airport, splitting the tickets to Manchester Piccadilly (cheap day return) then Manchester Piccadilly to Manchester Airport (single) can be cheaper.

Tickets on this route are quite complicated. The National Rail Journey Planner might want to route you through Manchester Victoria which is usually slower and not good if you have to hump your flight luggage around Manchester stations possibly on the Metrolink tram (at extra cost).

Strangely if you book a ticket on a Trans Pennine through train from Huddersfield - Manchester Airport it may cost more than if you book a ticket where a change of trains is required at Manchester Piccadilly. To the best of my knowledge the above split tickets are valid whether you change or not.
  • Splitting at Swindon for Swansea to London Paddington results in a saving of £14.10p for four singles compared to a return /2 singles.
