thanks sooo much for this tip martin and team
ive just read it as my mum is coming from portsmouth to shrewsbury for my grandads party on saturday
shes leaving tomorrow and a standard single ticket would have £59.50
    by splitting the ticket up
    ports-southampton=£7.80
    south-oxford =£5.50
    oxford-birmingham=£9.50
    birm-shrews=£10.30
    so in all costs £33.10
    thats a saving of £26.80
    wow thanks
a return ticket would have cost £68.50
and ive checked the dates and it would still work out cheaper to get singles again at £28.60
this did take me 3/4 hours to work out as there are quite a few stops but its well worth it dont you agree!

just a tip for when your on national rail
make sure that before you enter the next leg of your journey you let all the stooopid adverts load before you type or else youll just keep getting stuck on the page your on xx
I am not bossy I just have better ideas:p

Wow, thanks Martin. I know my saving isn't much but it's there. I travel regularly between Horsforth and Sheffield via Leeds. I usually only have a single journey as my husband either drops me off or picks me up at the weekend. On checking today I find that Horsforth to Leeds costs £1.50 then Leeds to sheffield costs £6.00. If I bought a ticket for the whole journey it would cost £8.20. Only saves 70p but that's more to spend on my grandchildren while I'm helping with childcare in the school hols.
    :hello:
  • Can anyone help. Eurostar are running services from regional stations to Paris but no low cost tickets are ever available. Can any one help

Hello this is my first post of what i hope to be many. Me and about 5 of my friends are students (17) and are going to a open day at imperial college London. What the cheapest way to get there.

From Crawley but are willing to travel to Gatwick or Redhill by bus.
To Royal Albert Hall or Prince consort Rd or South Kensington.
We have to be there by 10.00AM and will leave sometime after 4.00PM.

We are willing to get off at different stations to reduce the price as well as use the bus or any other means that would make it cheaper.

They aren't running services from regional stations.

What they are offering is a combination ticket that includes travel to London, Tube connection (if needed) & Eurostar fare.

So the simplest thing to do is split the journey at London and book Ipswich to London separate from the Eurostar

Check the coach services from Gatwick to Victoria - either Easybus or National Express - then get a bus to the Albert Hall / Memorial

I've used a split at either or both of Cheltenham/Wolverhampton. Works well for Saver returns, giving best flexibility of trains, but may be worth checking for advance tickets. Just make sure trains stop there, though most do.

  • Break at Kettering (may have to change at Leicester but it's only a 10 minute wait and the Leicester to london train is far nicer) . The day return Kettering to London INCLUDES a full day's Underground and there is no peak time restriction back from London to Kettering so you can get on the trains that folks who have a London to sheffield ticket can't!

    Saver return £96.55

    Singles £46.10 each way = £92.10 :(

Standard day return between Northallerton and Darlington = £7.60
Singles between Darlington and Edinburgh £17.40 each way = £34.80
    Total cost £42.40 :D
