Split Ticketing: Report successful routes here

For a couple of years now i have travelled to all Newcastle United home games at a cost of £92.90 return. Getting fed up of that price and also watching endless defeats i decided to swat up on split ticketing.
I managed to lower it to £51.40 and when i get a young persons rail card that will reduce further! So £34 instead of £93 is massive for me.
I did this by booking an off peak (08:00 and 22:00) return ticket from Northampton to Birmingham new street at a cost of £11.40.
Then two singles from Birmingham new street to Newcastle central at £20 each.
All of this was done on the trainline website.
I thought i would get it even cheaper when i found Northampton to Stoke for a fiver, but inexplicably a single from Stoke to Newcastle is more expensive than my entire journey.0 -

Just referring back to my original post (two above). If i booked from New street to Edinburgh Waverley and got off at Newcastle (which is a stop) what is stopping me from doing that? There is no ticket barriers at Newcastle station. If so that is £15.50. Five pound cheaper than going on the same train that i would of booked from New street to Newcastle.
Surely they must of invented a rule saying that i can't get off early, but what are they going to do?0 -

Yes there is a rule that says you can't get off early on cheap advance tickets (OK on normal fare ones).
If there are no barriers you'd get away with it - assuming they don't of a manned ticket check coinciding with you arriving0 -

...which is entirely possible, knowing NX. And if they really are stupid enough to try putting barriers in at York, it can only be a matter of time before they move on to Newcastle, so enjoy it while you can.0 -
Barriers at Newcastle are planned for later this year.
http://www.nationalexpresseastcoast.com/About-us/Latest-News1/Gating/The first stations to benefit from the new gates will be Grantham and Darlington with work beginning in spring. The gates should be operational by early summer. Following this, new gates will then be installed at Durham, Newcastle, Newark Northgate and YorkDid you really mean to put loose?

It doesn't have the biggest floor and there's not a huge entrance so i would imagine there is going to be a lot of bottle necks and queue's at Newcastle, especially on match days. Lovely :rolleyes:0

I've tried all the obvious intermediate stops - but I'm trying to beat the £41.30 offpeak return on the 07 40 from Warrington. (Can be done with advance fares via Leeds but not enough saving for the hassle of having to use specific trains). Anything not obvious?0

No. I assume this is a weekday? If so you're very unlikely to get anything cheaper because it's a rather busy commuter train (think what time it goes through Leeds!). If there's an advance to Leeds is there also one to York? Then York-Malton would be on a local ticket. Similarly Manchester, though presumably you've already tried this.0 -
I'm trying to get my Mum and aunt from Beeston (notts) to Edinburgh on Monday 6th July and back on Friday 10th July - most likely travelling at peak times (morning out and afternoon back).
From a quick search I seem to be able to make more savings if they are prepared to make multiple changes rather than just Beeston-Derby (change)-Edinburgh. (However, I can do this journey at the times I want on an off-peak return fare - still £135 for both though - with senior railcards)
Does anyone know a good place to split the ticket where they can still stay on the one train? Or should I go for the cheaper ticket with multiple changes?
thanks for any help.0
