If after reading the board and searching the booking sites (my top tip: use the nxec site not trainline-based ones) you get stuck let us know and we'll be happy to help, but it's not fair to make other people volunteer to do the hard work without at least having a go yourself.

Plenty of options have been suggested before for similar routes, if not exactly the same one. Best suggestions are usually Crewe, Birmingham and Cheltenham, and often a small diversion (e.g. Manchester, or even sometimes London/Reading) makes it cheaper too.
However, I agree with dzug that you've found an excellent fare for two people on that route. It's possible to get it down to £30 by playing around a bit with times (the cheapest option that day arrives back at Preston at 11pm), but note that the WCML is closed for a short stretch on the 23rd and you'll have to get a coach between Warrington and Crewe. This can be avoided if you wish by going via Manchester (book as two separate advance tickets, one PRE-MAN and one MAN-BHM); given that it only adds about a fiver to the total this is worth considering, especially with a child in tow.
So, in summary, what I suggest is as follows:
PRE-MAN d1747 £4.70
MAN-BHM £4.30 (look for Virgin Pendolino service, not XC)
BHM-BRI £13.20
BRI-BHM £9.35
BHM-PRE £3.95 (arriving 2305) or £10.20 (earlier)
= £35.50 (£41.75) for 1adult+1child FAM Rcd0 -

Splitting at both Doncaster and Peterborough will get you a return fare of £59.75 (use a normal day return Wakefield-Doncaster and advance singles for the rest) but I'm afraid there's nothing I can see to make it any cheaper than that. The alternative routing (via Sheffield and into St Pancras) can often be cheaper but it's not this time, perhaps because you're booking so late.0 -

It might be. It might not be. This sort of thing varies depending on the time of day and day of the week. I am afraid you will have to do some research to find the answer for your situation.
And splitting at at all might be unnecessary - there are some decent through fares available0 -
Do you think split ticketing would work on the Stansted Express?
Liverpool St -> Stansted is normally £28 return.
Liverpool St -> Bishops Strotford -> Stansted is £19.50 off peak return.
This is staying on the same train, not getting off at bishops strotford. Seems to good to be true?0 -
