    Thanks :j

    Hi, if you give us some dates I'm sure that we could help more, but after a quick look you could try splitting as follows;

Poole - London - Edinburgh or
Poole - London - Glasgow - Edinburgh or
Poole - Southampton Cen - Birmingham NS - Edinburgh or
Poole - Manchester Pic - Edinburgh or
    Poole - Newport(SW) - Manchester Pic - Edinburgh

Just make sure that you give yourself plenty of time to make your connections if getting Cheap advance singles

Try splitting your journey at Newton Abbot and Birmingham New Street and look for the cheap Advance singles between those two stations.

But make sure you give yourself plenty of time to catch your connection at Newton Abbot

Admittedly this won't be the world's most popular journey, but Swansea to Pontypridd day return off-peak is £13.70. If you split your journey at Bridgend, it comes to a mere £10.50, savings of £3.20.

Splitting at Swindon for Swansea to London Paddington results in a saving of £14.10p for four singles compared to a return /2 singles.

Not anymore. I am presently being quoted £66 off-peak return from Swansea to Paddington, and if I split at Swindon it is £38 + £40, so £78. I can't find anywhere to split this journey right now to make it cheaper...

Split journey at Crewe and bought 2 singles @ £16 and £2.90, travelling off peak and £16 ticket is 1st class-saved £24.60, so less than half price!

1st time I've tried this and as living on v limited income due to redundancy every saving is something to celebrate. Journey is for OH to start new job so lots to celebrate. This site has been a godsend-will never revert to old spending habits now we've seen the light.

    Thank you.:j
2 years 6 months to go until credit card/loan debt paid off...then start on the mortgage!!! :o
...but heading in the right direction :)
  • Beloved moneysavers,

I need to travel from Bristol to Cambridge sometime in June or early July, but the date is not important (though I need to find out if I can meet Person X on the weekend or not). This will probably be a day trip. Sadly, I'd like to arrive in Cambridge before noon (the earlier the better); I can leave at any time after 17:00 (though later might be better).

Is there any use looking for discount tickets or splitting the journey?

Wanted to get from TVP to BHM, cheapest return for the time I wanted was £70.70 (I was a little late booking so this is the standard off-peak fare). After a little messing about on Trainline, I've ended up paying £54.40. Here's how...

Used Nat Rail Enqs to get the times and locations of all the stops on both legs of the route. Then worked out that I could buy Tiverton - Bristol Parkway Return (£14.50), Bristol Parkway to Cheltenham Spa Return (£19.40) and Cheltenham Spa to Birmingham New Street Return (£20.50). I used the info from NRE to line up the arrival and departure times for each section, and remained on the same train for the entire 'out' leg, and the same one for the entire 'return' leg, just producing my various different tickets as required.

    Thats a good saving Muggles.

I hope you don't mind me saying that you could've saved even more by not using The Trainline and therefore avoiding their fees (postage, credit card, etc).

If you had booked with First Great Western, I think you can save £5 per booking. With a bit of imaginative email manipulation, you could knock £15 off the total for your tickets.
