Hi all,
I've had a look on the virgin site for Preston to Euston (13/08 rtn 17/08). If I've done this right, I can get a 2 1st class tickets for £194. Trying the split ticket route (via Wigan, Crewe or Warrington) it comes out at 216 for the same trains.
does anyone know of any cheaper deals on this route?
Thanks,
Ian0 -

Hi all,
Just bought a split ticket for Leeds to London and was shocked at how much i saved!
Split at peterborough and the ticket costs £38.90.
Leeds to peterborough: £13
Peterborough to london kings cross: £25.90
the trainline and national rail websites quoting £77!
So i saved about half the price!
this is also a peak time train (9am!).
I'm a happy bunny0 -

Hi KeithP
Best I can find is Macc to Stoke on Trent change and on to Bristol Temple Mead £124, or Macc to Birmingham New Street change and on to Bristol Temple Mead for £117 with crosscountry reduction on Martin's newsletter. However, I'm absolutely certain that last time I made the journey (same day, same sort of time) my very much missed colleague found a better route for around £50 but I can't remember which stations that involved or which trains. I've checked the routes on the trainline (I think) and I think my only options are Macc to Manchester then Bristol or Macc to either Stoke then Bristol or Macc to Birmingham then Bristol but I'm quite prepared to be wrong, I never thought I'd say this but I miss British Rail!
Any help you can offer greatly appreciated.
regards

hi guys sorry its taking me such a long time to report this one. This way of buying a ticket is very good if its last minute and you think your stuck with a very expensive ticket. ok here goes.
Very often there is very good availibility for single tickets from Edinburgh to Birmingham for just £15.50 single (you even get 1/3rd off with railcard) There is even quite good availbility for the day before travel!
Now most trains that go to birmingham from edinburgh and vice versa stop at
Dunbar
Berwick-upon-Tweed
Newcastle
Durham
Darlington
York
Leeds
Wakefield Westgate
Sheffield
Chesterfield
Derby
YOU CAN CHECK WHICH TRAIN A TRAIN STOPS AT BY GOING TO www.transportdirect.com
Now heres the trick edi to derby will cost a whopping £99.50 for an off peak return!!! and a off peak return edi to sheffield £85.60 and so on.
Now it may be that there is some cheap advance singles but not always so it seems you are stuck buying the off peak return - not really!
buy the single ticket from edi to birmingham and a single from bimingham to edi but get off the train early!!!
These two tickets will only cost you £31.00 return a big saving
Now i believe you are not really suppose to get off a train early but as i see it you have paid the full journey so can this be stopped?
The very important point about this is you must ensure that you get on the train printed on your ticket - if you dont you will be charged the full fare as the ticket is only valid on that train. For example if the train printed on your tickets leaves at 1403 from birmingham but you are getting on at leeds you must check via www.transportdirect.com what time the train arrives into say leeds and get on that train ONLY.
if there are barrier checks at the station they may question why you are levaing the train early or getting on the train further up the line, i dont know how you combat this, unless you buy a ticket for a very short journey costing very little to get you through the barrier or unless there is no reason to go through the barriers as you are merely changing platforms to get a local connection.
let me give you an example of how i saved my friend £40.
He wanted a return ticket from dunfermline to shipley for the following day! now it's very unlikley that you would get an advance ticket at such notice - there wasn't any, so the cheapest ticket was an off peak return at £85.30 ouch!!! (PLEASE NOT IF YOU ARE BOOOKING IN ADVANCE AND NO CHEAP TICKETS COME UP, play around by buying tickets from a main station eg buy a single ticket dunfermline to edi, then an advance cheap ticket may be available from edi to leeds, you then just pay the small difference again between leeds and shipley)
anyway the cheapest ticket was £85.30 return off peak
a quick search showed there was £15.50 tickets edi to birmingham new street and furher checks at www.transportdirect.com revealed the most trains stopped at leeds.
I checked the both the outward and return train stopped at leeds and then bought the tickets as follows:
I got him a single ticket from:
dunfermline to edinburgh £4.20
(he used the £15.50 ticket edi to birmingham and got off at leeds)
single from leeds to shipley £2.70
and vice versa on return journey
the total cost was £44.80 (although was cheaper using £5 off codes as listed on mse)
85.30-44.80 meant a saving of £40.50!!!!
hope this all makes sense any questions feel free to ask0 -
