BT have been selling them off. Some people think it's a trendy thing to have, though personally I don't think they are either attractive or practical as a storage facility.

And this one is also a mess of a floor plan. Too much time spent trying to make the perfect living space, and ending up with one strange long bedroom, with multiple doors and a bath in it. And the other bedroom under the road again, and looking a lot like a prison cell.
There are lots of basement flats in this area, and everyone is trying to find the perfect floorplan for long narrow flats with windows only at each end.

I hate spiders too - our old Tudor place was literally crawling with them and the guy that bought it from us was petrified of them
Almost without exception, every evening during our ownership at least one (usually a large one, too!) would saunter across the living room floor - lovely, NOT!
That said, that's a very cute house - don't like the exposed brickwork though, although I'm most likely in the minority there, LOL! Our current place had had all the internal walks stripped back to bare stone by the PO - awful IMHO and we're in the process of re-plastering as it's not a cottage and would never have been like that originally
