I was part of the school exchange programmes in both France and Germany. Both penfriends' homes, the washing machine and, in one case, a freezer was in the outhouse, which was next to the front door. So could do the washing and not hear it. A friend's penfriend had her washing machine in a cupboard in the hallway.

In the USA and Canada, its common practice to put the washing machine and tumble drier in the basement

Having family in the USA I've never been in a house that didn't have a utility room off the kitchen or the washing machine kept in the garage. You do see them in the basement in films but most house use the basement as another lounge, gym, or\and office never a place to do washing.

I am aware that a lot of countries have toilets and showers in the utility room, although they are usually curtained\walled off. A lot of the older houses around here have the washing machine, fridge, etc, in the old outside toilet\coal store in the back garden.

This one seems to have an unusual micro-climate; wintry snow at the front and bright summer sunshine in the back garden

It's obviously been built directly over the exact North-South divide...

It was always going to sell at an appropriate level, not pennies, but it's quite a coup to sell it to someone on another continent who's never been there.

It's actually sloppy and inaccurate reporting, and obviously a nice bit of marketing by the auction house. Its guide price is a quid, and will make more than that because it's an auction. I guess it will sell for £5000-£10000 on May 18th.

It would have but for those pesky Texans!
Maybe we should all market our houses for 99p just like Ebay....and wait for the bidding war.

And that much crinoline on top of a 1970s fire can't possibly be safe.
