MSE News: Eon is latest to announce energy price rises

  • Like Dicky99, I'm baffled by this price increase. I'm in the Midlands area, and on SaveOnline4. My gas price rise is about 18.9%, just above the quoted average rise, and my electricity price rise is about 17%, well above the quoted average 11.4%. Someone must be getting a negligible increase.

I sent an email to EOn to query this and their reply simply said that I would continue to get a discount of 6% on their standard price. This didn't answer the question I'd asked, and I can't find their 'standard price' anywhere on their website to make the comparison. I've emailed them again to request this information.

Although historically happy with them, I'm now tempted to jump ship.
  • I too have just received the letter from E.On detailing the price increases to be inflicted on the E.On SaveOnline 4 tariff.

I live in the Scottish Borders and the rate for Gas is increasing in excess of 25%!

Can anyone shed some light on this given the rate rises quoted in the recent media coverage?

Also, how can I compare the E.ON SaveOnline 4 tariff rates applicable to me with others E.ON SaveOnline 4 tariff rates? Is it possible, or do we not get to see that?

    :(
  • Hi All
    Just had my increase too!!
However, the rise for the "first units" of gas and elec is very high - 23% for Elec and 46% for gas!!!!!! the main units cost 10% and 15% respectively. So your rise will be a higher % if you use less (live on your own/no kids on PCs the whole time etc). Our overall rise was 17% when I worked it out.
Save online 9 represents an 8% rise and is the best on comparison sites so we will probably stay with EON and move to that one.
    Hope this helps, revivor
  • I'm a bit confused by this. I signed up for SaveOnline 4 back in December 2010. The website says my plan ends in January 2012 but the letter they have sent me today says that I can switch to another provider if I let them know by 13 September.

Will I face termination charges if I do switch?

No. Provided you signal your intention to move prior 13/9 ....... and then complete the switch within 6 weeks.

But - before switching have a look (via the 'Switch' link on your online access if you have that) at their Saveonline 9. It may be the cheapest variable rate available to you? (and there's no termination charge for moving across)

    Hi monkeyspanner

The Saveonline 9 prices announced last Friday will not be changing on 13 September 2011.

However, Saveonline 5 prices will change on this date in accordance with our price increase also announced on Friday.

Just a quick heads up; the 6%/2% terms applicable to these tariffs are not additional discounts. They're an assurance that prices will be at least this percentage cheaper than our standard rates throughout the length of the agreement.

Discounts on both versions of this tariff are 8% for dual fuel and 6% for electric only.

Hope this makes things a little clearer monkeyspanner. Let me know if you need any more details as will be happy to help.

This in direct contradiction to the advice I was give by one of eon's telephone customer services agents. He stated Save online 9 would increase inline with the 13th Sept 2011 price increases and that eon "are in the process of updating our website". Irrespective, this price rise is unreasonable in the light of whosale energy prices and reflect a disrespect for existing customers. If eon can launch a new tariff i.e. save online 9 which is cheaper than the new prices on existing tariffs such as save online 5 which have months to run this is a cynical attempt in the hope existing customers will not notice the price rise and simultaneously attract new customers with a new tariff. I have received a notification of price rise from eon but no offer for a swap to save online 9.
I am not impressed with the contradictory information or eons customer service so considering my options for a switch.
  • I had my new tariff through today for E.On SaveOnline 5 (only changed to them in May through the MSE link where E-On was supposed to save me £53.22 per year on moneysupermarket.com).

My last annual usage was 2407 kWh for electricity and 7735 kWh for gas which made my E-On monthly direct debit £48.50.

By my calculations I will be paying an EXTRA £121.72 based on last year's bill INSTEAD of saving £53.22.

How is that possible? Is it even legal?

I know one thing, it's not fair.

Save Online 5 is not fixed it is just guarateed to be discounted against their standard online rate by I think 6%. Their standard rate will increse by about 11% on electric and 18% on gas (some regions are higher) on 13 September 2011.

You can swap away from eon but be aware that eon do not give the save online discounts on their last bill so make sure you go online, enter your meter readings and request a bill to get the discount up to a point nearer your swap. Also you may be liable to a £30 early swap penalty. If you write to eon prior to 13 September rejecting their increase and initiate a swap you will not pay the new rates as long as your new supplier contacts eon within 15 days of your letter.

You may find eons save online 9 is cheaper for you you can check it out on eons site or have a look at www.uswitch.com

I'm certainly confused by the saveonline7 (my product) versus the saveonline9 tariff.

In theory, at 6% below standard pricing, saveonline7 should be cheaper than saveonline9 (which is supposedly 2% below standard).

If the saveonline9 price is not going up (e.on rep's comment earlier on), then it is already cheaper than saveonline7, yet should be 4% more!!?

I'm clearly not understanding this and the e.on rep I spoke to couldn't really explain it either!

    SAVEONLINE7 TARIFF:
    The unitprices are shown as:
    Electricity
Normal units up to 900 kWhs per year
    24.213 pence

    Normal units
    12.1905 pence per kWh

    Gas
Normal units up to 2680 kWhs per year
    7.75005 pence

    Normal units
    3.37155 pence per kWh

    SAVEONLINE9 TARIFF
    Electricity
Normal units up to 900 kWhs per year
    23.3835 pence

    Normal units
    10.6365 pence per kWh

    Gas
Normal units up to 2680 kWhs per year
    7.20195 pence

    Normal units
    3.129 pence per kWh

I'm very confused! Hope someone understands it and can explain.

    Graham.
