  • Hi folks,

Have been expecting this news for a long time.

I'm on Save Online 5 (or whatever its called, sorry) which has a termination(?) fee. Does anyone know if this still applies if I leave because of these price rises? I thought I could reject the price rises if I move supplier but not sure how the fees apply in this case.

    Thanks

Thanks for all these regular wonderful updates but if I'm honest I simply don't understand the regular advice to switch when the increase is across the board; I think what is needed is a step by step guide to make the comparison. If it is ok to point out that annual consumption khw and mpg and such jargon stuff make no sense. I haven't seen a guide around that's actually helpful in understanding this before even using comparison sites. Have you considered putting up a poll and asking how many people understand or use of these comparison sites to their benefit at all? You might be surprised by the results cos I can tell you that I've no bloody clue. I only see lots of cliched stuff bandied about switching service providers but really nothing about the original value of energy costs and what's to be expected or how to measure useage.

The advice is quite simple. Unless you are basing a comparison on you rannual usage in Kww's the result may not be accurate. Then you need to decide whether you want a fixedo r a capped rate, of one which can vary.

A month or two ago I would've been looking for a fixed rate, but more recently its harder to judge as many of the best fixed rates have been pulled. This can mean the premium for a fixed rate is much higher.

  • EDF`s Fixed Saver V2 -is quite probably the best of the fixes - but its `only` till sep 2012 , for Fixed 2014 the elec units are somthing like 30% premium BUT this could be partly offset against lower standing charge (£24 a year less)

    Hi,

not sure but this is on the small print for the new SaveOnline 9 tariff- so I expect the same applies to previous versions:

"A contract cancellation fee of £30 may apply if you leave before your plan end date. This fee will not be applied if you leave following us notifying you of a price increase. If we increase prices, full details will be set out in our price change notification."

I will not change British Gas because of their no problem service compared to scare stories I've heard from eon consumers but I'd have loved to know how much I'm paying compared with others and really don't know how to figure it out. I pay fixed rate by direct debit. That's all I know. It is important that the guides are comprehensive, free of jargon, if you really want people to benefit from advice and comparison sites.

There is something fishy going on when the % increases between the energy co.'s are roughly the same.

With negotiated deals with different wholesalers wouldn't you think there would be differences ?? BUT considering some have their own generating / wholesale businesses there is a reason to suspect something sinister.

Gas is free (natural process) but the cost of extracting and transporting is the key, why is it conveniently linked to the price of oil ??? A few % for inflation n wages not double digit % rises!!

what I'm trying to fathom, is save online 9 based on prices from 13th Sept, or will it increase when prices go up, bit liuke what happened with websaver 12 when bg announced their increase, or what scottish power are doing with Direct 2012 and Online Energy Saver 14, not putting uinit rates up on normal idate for rest of variable tariff increases (1-8-11), will they put them up in a few months time, cos save online 9 is really competitive in terms of cost.

It's only linked to the price of oil when oil is going up, I think you'll find. It's one of those 'special' links that only apply in certain circumstances. And I 100% agree with your mistrust of the increases being almost identical in %tage terms but we must be wrong as OFGEM are forever telling us we have a truly competitive market.:rotfl:

It's not as difficult as you are making out. Not trying,is likely to cost you a great deal of money, but that's your choice of course.

As you have been with BG for some time, take your bills and find a period covering 12 months or as close to that as possible and add up separately the Kwh for each of the gas and electricity. Use a 12 month period of time ending with a firm reading, not an estimate.

Then use a comparison website and key in the KWh unit consumption you have just calculated against the Supplier (BG) and the tariff (probably standard but check from your bill).

Press the button and hey presto you will get a list of alternatives with savings shown. Have a look further down for fixed tariffs and see if any of those appeal, so that your rates won't go up during that period of the fix.

just be aware that NPower and EDF haven't put up their prices yet.

If you want any advice on the options, come back here and many of us will try and help. :)
