  • This is why you have to careful when so called experts are telling people to switch - fine if you are switching to a fixed tariff but if you aren't you can drop a right goolie if you're not up to speed.

One thing to watch out for if switching away from EON - they don't apply any tariff discounts to your final bill, as per section 4 of your T&Cs 'Ending this contract'.

You can beat this by submitting an online* meter reading in the last few days before the switch is due to happen and ensure you select the 'Request new bill' button (if I recall correctly) in the following screen. This will mean your final bill (for the remaining usage after that) should only be a few day's worth of elec/gas, whereas everything up to your requested bill should be discounted.

If you don't see the 'request new bill' button after submitting the readings, call up the next day to request one based on your submitted readings.

Of course don't forget to take readings on the actual switchover days (they may differ for elec and gas), perhaps take legible photos too as evidence!

Finally check these readings actually get used for your closing/opening readings for the old/new provider.

    * I'm not sure if you can request a bill ad-hoc if you don't have an online account. Also the 'request new bill' might only appear if you've not recently been billed.

    Hi all

I'd like to use the comparison sites to see if I should switch and fix, but having problems as I don't know my annual KwH usage or even my monthly spend on each of gas and elec (I recently switched in May 2011 to EON, SaveOnline 5 for both elec and gas but there are no bills available to view when I log onto my account).

Could anyone help me out with calculating my annual Kwh usage as I've heard that this gives the most accurate comparison over monthly cost etc.? I don't really understand what KwH are (despite several hours this evening googling for this info..)

I'm guessing that if I contact my old supplier, British Gas, they would provide me with an average KwH usage, but can I input this figure into the comparison websites when I am trying to compare EON??

Any help / advice would be very gratefully received!

I am an EON customer on the energy saver online tariff and so have just checked through uswitch comparison site and can see that I can save over £135 by switching to Npower - so good bye EON - I urge others to also check (it only took 15 mins)

Npower have not yet annouced their price rises you may find that you will be paying more before the transfer of suppliers is completed.

A KwH is sometimes called a unit of electricity and you can take it as one increment on your electricity meter. If you had a one bar electric fire consuming 1Kw and you left it on for an hour that would be 1KwH of electricity or at current rates about 12p. A gas meter measures the volume of gas you use and this is converted to KwH by a series of calculations. You should be able to find both these figures on old bills.

You may be able to estimate your usage from your monthly direct debits, although this is a combined figure for gas and electric it is normally split somewhere in the paperwork. If you can get KwH figures from BG yes you could use these on a site like uswitch.com

Does anyone know whether saveonline v3 customers are allowed to cancel early and move away without penalty because of the price rise? Can we give notice now or do we have to wait for a letter informing us of the rise?

Thank you very much monkeyspanner! I sort of understand it now! :)

I've managed to obtain my bill history from BG:

    Bill date:
    30 December 2010
    Bill period:
    24 Sep 10 - 29 Dec 10

Gas units converted = 226.06 kWh used over 11 days
Gas units converted = 3326.45 kWh used over 66 days
Gas units converted = 1517.88 kWh used over 20 days

    Bill date:
    15 March 2011
    Bill period:
    30 Dec 10 - 14 Mar 11

Gas units converted = 3900.25 kWh used over 75 days

    Bill date:
    04 May 2011
    Bill period:
    15 Mar 11 - 02 May 11

Gas units converted = 1027.53 kWh used over 49 days

Adding these figures up, over the 7 months (approx end Sept 2010 to end April 2011) have I used 9998.17 kWh?? I live in a 2 bed house with one other person – does this sound about right?

Comparison sites like Energyhelpline are asking for how many kWh per year I use.

To work out this figure, do I take my monthly average over the 7 months sept-april with BG, then multiply this by 12 to work out my annual usage? i.e. 9998.17 kWh / 7 months = 1428.31 kWh on avg a month, therefore annually usage = 1428.31 x 12 months = 17,139.72

Maths not my strong point at all as you can probably tell!!

    1. I came off EONs Fixonline 8 at the end of June and was unsure whether to change to their SaveOnline 7 or pay £300 more per year and go on their Fixed Price 5. I decided on SaveOnline 7 and switched on July 1st

    2. After EONs price rise today i went on to the comparison websites and by accident discovered that EON put up their SaveOnline 7 unit rates. When i rang customer service they told me it went up on July 2nd!! What a bunch of crooks EON are (as if we didn't know)

    3. After this stunt I now want to leave EON after being with them for ages and go onto an EDF fixed tariff but will i still have to pay their £30 cancellation charge? If not what is the best way to tackle it? Shall i sign up to EDF asap or inform EON first?

Any advice on this and switching to EDF gratefully received.
